Duluth, Nov. 18—The Chemung mine, one of the most important prop- erties on the Mesabi range, which was leased by the United States Steel cor- poration, has been purchased by the corporation, according to information glven out here. The consideration is said to have been $18,300,000, of which $5,000,000 was In cash and the remainder in se- curities. The mine was purchased from T. F. Cole, G. C. Hartley and C. A. Congdon of Duluth. It was thought that the steel cor- poration would renew its lease on the property, but the purchase of the “fee” Instead was a surprise in min- ing circles. Marie, Mich., Nov. 18.— 7 Forty lake stéamers are in shelter between the Seo and Whitefish point awaiting the abatement of a fifty-mile gale that is sweeping the upper lakes. Nearly six inches of snow has fallen in twelve hours. Vessels' reported overdue at Port Arthur and Duluth are believed to be among the fleet held at Whitefish. London, Nov. 18.—A dispatch from Vienna, via Amsterdam, to Reuter’s Telegram company contains an offi- cial army order issued by Field Mar- shal Oskar Potiorek, commanding the Austrian troops operating against the Servians. The order reads: “After nine days of severe fighting against an obstinate and numerically superior enemy the brave troops of the Fifth and Sixth corps have reached Kulnobara and forced the enemy to flight. Over 8,000 prisoners, forty-two cannon, thirty-one machine g\1s and numcrous war material were captured.” IS THREE WEEKS OVERDUE British Steamer Carries Meat Cargo Worth $1,000,000. London, Nov. 18.—Grave fears are expressed for the safety of the Brit ish liner La Correntina, which has not been heard of since she left Buenos Ayres for Liverpool Oct. 5. The steamer is three weeks overdue. She carried a cargo of meat worth $1, 000,000. The liner was armed for defense and one rumor suggests that she has been in action with the German armed Mner Kronprinz Wilhelm and that both vessels were sunk. Irish Guards General Killed. London, Nov. 18.—Announcement is made that Brigadier General Charles Fitzclarence of the Irish guards has been killed in action at Ypres.
