GLAIMS OF SUCCESS More Russian Victo- ries A{l@mced. BATTLING IN PRUSSIA Fighting on Frontier Continues Without Decisive Result London, Oct. 5.—From Petrograd still come uninterrupted claims of Russian successes on the Polish. fron- tier, but from Galicia, where the Rus- sian and German and Austrian forces are at death grips before Cracow, has come no advices to indicate which side has taien first honors. The Rus- sian official report is silent on the Galician campaign and the Austrian official report direct from Vienna makes no reference to the compaign against Russia. The German report chronicles a possible advance of Russians across the Niemen river. A belated dispatch from Copenhagen asserts that Emperor William recent- ly has been at Breslau, where he de- cided on a four-fold offensive move- ment against Kovno, Warsaw, Lodz and Galicia. When this is under way, it was added, he expects to return to the western theater of war. Advices from Bukowina, the south- ern tip of Galicia, announce the ad- vance of Russian forces into Transyl- vania, and add that a battle between the Austrians and combined Russian and Servian forces is in immediate prospect. This is the first news of the movements in this territory since the early stages of the war. Battling on Prussian Line. The Russian official report says the battle on the East Prussian frontier continues on the line of Miriampol, without decisive result. The German position at Preskasno is said to have been occupied by the Russians. This place is west of Symno. The Germans are sald to have retired from Liepouny in the direction of Suwalki, in the vicinity of which place flerce fighting is going on. German reinforcements hurried to the rescue of retreating troops are said to have taken the.offensive in front of Augustowo and Suwalki. The Germans, after bombarding Augusto- wo from the northwest, were driven froni their positions. The Russians declare the Germans have been forced to .evacuate St. Shutshin and Grajewo, where the Rus- sian troops invaded German territory. On the Mlawa line the Germans made an offensive demonstration, but were repulsed. The official statement adds the Russians haye captured several automobile trucks from the German column operating against Ossowetz. OFFICIAL REPORT ISSUED Austria Admits Presence of Cholera In Galicia. Vienna, via Rome, Oct. 5.—Regard- ing the reports that have been circu- lated of the presence of hundreds of cases of Asiatic cholera in the dual monarchy, the government issued a statement giving the exact number of cases discovered. There are fifty-eight cases in Ga- licia, one only in Moravia and one in Stlesta. Where a cholera case s reported the, place is immediately fumigated. RUSTEM BEY GOING HOME Recent Statement Cause of Ambassa- dor's Departure. Washington, Oct. 5.—A. Rustem Bey, the Turkish ambassador, has left Washington for New York and will shortly sail for Turkey. In a statement before leaving the ambassador said he was quitting .the United States on leave of absence at his own initiative. He explained that this step, which he had undertaken without conferring with his government, with which he had not been in communication, was the result of the attitude of the Unit- ed States toward statements he had made comparing lynchings in the United States and the “water cure” in the Philippines to massacres in Turkey. FIFTY ARE REPORTED DEAD Another ltalian Steamer Sunk by Austrian Mine. Venice, Oct. 5.—A report has reach- ed here of the sinking of another Ital- ian boat and the death of its crew of fifty men near Trieste by a floating mine. There is alarm all along the Ttalian coast at the presence of Austrian mines at sea. Water traffic with Austria has been suspended and goods destined for Austrian ports are being abandcned on the docks. Cholera Reported in Germany. London, Oct. 5.—The North Ger man Gazette admits the appearance of cholera in Germany as well as in Austria, says a Rome dispatch to Reuter’s Telegram company, but as- sures the public that the outbreak is well in hand. In British Columbia women teach- ers only are allowed to take house- hold economic lectures. A -want ad will sell it for you. General Yankovitch, commander in chief of the Servian army now operat- ing against the Austrians, is meeting with a series of successes. Aided by Russian troops, the Serbs have almost caused the surrender of the Austrians. When Austria is defeated Russia will be enabled to send all her troops against Germany. HEROIC AGTION OF PRUSSIAN GUARDS London, Oct. 5—"Details are just available of the heroic engagements of Prussian guards at Suippes (in the French department of Marne) a fort- night ago,” says the Paris correspond- ent of the Daily Mail. “It arose out of the German attempt to cut the railways connecting Rheims and Ver- dun. “This attempt failed and the Ger mans were in danger of being caught between tke French infantry and cav- alry, It was at this moment, while the greater part of the German troops were retiring in the direction of Rheims, that a regiment of Prussian guards threw itself desperately upon the lines of the French cavalry. “Not once, but five times, did the devoted regiment hurl itself against the solid French front. After the fifth charge there were only a hun- dred men left. With signs of reluc- tance they gave the signal of surren- der and it was then found that nearly all of the hundred were wounded. “In the course of this engagement the guards lost 3,000 men, it is stated.” GERMANS REPORT FRENCH REPULSE Berlin, via Amsterdam and London, Oct. The following official state- ment was given out at army head- quarters: “The right wing of the German army in France has repulsed renewed efforts on the part of the French to outflank it. To the south of Roye the French have been dislodged from their positions. “The situation on the center of the battle front remains unchanged. “German troops advancing in the Argonne region have won substantial advances in a southerly direction. “Fast of the River Meuse French troops from Toui undertook energetic night attacks, but were repulsed. “In the Kastern arena of the war an advance of Russian forces across the Niemen river against the Germans in the province of Suwalki seems im- minent.” IN BEMIDJI The Evidence Is Supplied by Local Testimony. If the reader wants stronger proof than the following statement and ex- perience of a resident of Bemidji, what can it be? % Mrs. D. G. Miller, 313 1-2 Second St., Bemidji, Minn., says: “I have used Doan’s Kidney Pills off and on for the past four or five years when- ever I have had trouble from my ‘back or kidneys. I don’t know what brought on the complaint unless it was hard work. I had backache and dull pains across my loins and I was bothered day and night. I also had a tired, languid feeling that robbed me of energy and I was caused an- noyance by the kidney secretions. I heard about Doan’s Kidney Pills and as they were highly recommended for kidney and bladder complaints, I got a box at Barker’s Drug Store. They quickly relieved me of the pain in my back and toned up my kidneys. I am a poor hand to take medicine, but when I feel signs of kidney complaint coming on, I be- gin with Doan’s Kidney : Pills and they do good work.” Price 50c, at all dealers.
