London, = Sept. 30~—The British army autliorities are admittedly gravely conéerned over the unsani- tary conditions in the field. Reports are persistent that Asiatic cholera prevails among the wounded in Vienna and Budapest and among the troops on the firing line in Gali- cla and thaf it has also appeared in certain parts of Russia. Typhoid fever and typhus as welll as dysentery are sald to be raging in the ranks of some of the German armies and many of the French and| British soldiers have been sent back from the field base suffering with dis-| ease. As a result precautions are be- ing taken. Enormous quantities of quicklime have been sent to the front, which are being used when necessary to clear up battle lines in the rear of troops. In addition precaution is being taken not to procure water for use of the troops from contaminated sources. That Przemysl still is in the hands | of the Austrians is indicated by offi- clal advives saying Austrian sorties from the fortresses have not been successtul, and that many prisoners, a number of cannon and some stores of ammunition have fallen into Rus- slan hands. The advices do not con- firm the report that two of the Prze- mysl forts have been captured by the | Russians. The - Austrian retreat inl Galicia continues in great confusion, according to the official report. Russians Proved Successful. “Despite the generally acceptéil idea that Ruseiun troops are unable to op- erate In the mountains, as shown in the Manchurian campaign, -the Rus- sians on this occasion proved that un- der able leadership they are able to conquer alike on the plains or in the mountains.” . Referring to the events on the River Niemen Colonel Shumsky says: “It 1s ezsential to determine wheth- er the Germans will be able to com- pel the Russians to refrain from the |’ operations in the Carpathians in order to rush to the Niemen.” He belleves the operaticns on the Niemen, even in the event of (lerman success, will not have decisive sig- nificance and he argues that the Rus- slan operations in Galicia and the Carpathians will influence the whole course of the aign. Heavy Artillory Get- ting Into ‘Action, LARGE FORGE MOVING ON BELGIAN CAPITAL Esimated That 150,000 Tet- tons Wil Take Part in the Attack on Gy, Rotterdam, via London, Sept. 30.— Activities along the Belgian frontier indicate that tne Germans are plan- ning for a siege of Antwerp within a few days. More than 25,000 men of the ‘German naval réserves have been brought from the North sea and from| the towns of Kiel and Hamburg to Brussels and are being held in readi- ness to serve on an improvised Ger- man fleet should Antwerp and Ostend be taken. As a direct result of this move'the Dutch authorities along the Scheldt have increased their. watchfulness, for during a siege of Antwerp England might like ‘to send reinforcements through -the Dutch Scheldt, which would be a breach of neutrality, while on the other hand a German victory would bring danger of an attempt on the part of Germany to use the mouth of the Scheldt as a base from which |f to attack the British naval forces in the North sea. Communication with Antwerp has been almost suspended. The town can be reached by automobile, while one small freight line from Rotterdam maintains a desultory day service. Only those . provided with extraordi- nary passports and first class creden- tials are admitted. Germans and Austrians Expelled. The fear of German spies has some what subsided. Meantime, however, all have been expelled and even those who are.of German and -Austrian de- scent but who have been Belgian sub- jects for many years have been placed under strict military guards in and around the triangle formed by Os- tend, Ghent and Antwerp. The moment for the-actual siege of Antwerp, according to the best in- formed circles here, will depend on the outcome of the present, battle in Northern France. Should Germany win in this battle the attack on Ant. |§ werp will be pushed at once, while in case of a German defeat the troops now holding the line of the Echeldt will be used to resist any Belgian at- @ tempt to cut the route of the retreat- German and Austrizn subjects |8 ing Germans. . < s &) = 5 s SRRy ® 2 Never Questioned - Royal Baking Powder is absolutely pure and wholesome.
