Illinois, diana, lowa and Michigan. Oyster Bay, N. Y., Sept. 16.—Colo- nel Roosevelt will devote two weeks to his coming campaign in the Middle West. He will leave New York Thursday night and will ‘make . his first speech in Wichita, Kan., Satur- day night. Next Monday night the colonel will speak at Kansas City, Kan.,, Tuesday at Lincoln, Neb.,, Wednesday at Des Moines, Thursday at'Chicago, Friday at Fast St. Louis, T, and Saturday at Indianapolis. On Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 28 and 29, he will be in Ohio and will end his campaign on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Bay City, .+ Mich. He also will make at least fifty short, informal addresses dur ing the trip. DEMOCRATS WIN IN MAINE Mayor Curtis of Portland Will Be Next Governor. Portland, Me., Sept. 16.—The Demo- cratic victory in Maine’s state elec- tion was r sured by the 3,587 plural- ity by whieh Mayor Oakley O. Curtis of Portland defeated Governor Will- iam T. Haines, Republican, for re- election, according to unofficial re- turns from all but thirty-seven of the 521 cities and towns. All four con- gressmen, three Republicans and one Democrat, were re-elected. In a vote heavier than that cast at the last presidential election both Haines and Curtis ran well ahead of the Taft and Wilson figures, while the Progressive vote cast for Halbert P. Gardner, the head of the tick- et, showed a pronounced slump from that cast for Roosevelt. GOVERNOR BANS HANGINGS Oregon Executive Nulls Capital Pun- ishment Code. Salem, Ore.,, Sept. 16.—Governor Oswald West announced that he would permit no more hangings in Oregon until after the November election, at which the people will vote on a meas- ure to abolish capital punishment, and until after the next legislature meets in January. A measure for the abolition of cap- ital punishment similar to the one now pending was defeated overwhelm- ingly at the last general election. Paris, Sept. 16.—In a late list of casualties is the annouhcement of the death of General Charles Roques, who was killed by being struck in the head by a bullet near Bar-le-Duc.
