HUSTING HIS OPPONENT Latter Named as Democratic Candl- date for Upper Branch of Congress. Emanuel Philipp G. O. P. Selection for Chief Executive of State. Milwaukee, Sept. 3.—The nomina- tions of Governor Francis E. McGov- ern, Republican, and Paul O. Hust- ing, Democrat, for United States sen- ator and Emanuel Philipp, Republic- an, for governor, seem assured from returns received from the primary election. Both Judge John C. Karel and John A. Aylward claim the nomination for governor on the Democratic ticket and it may take an official count to decide the winner. McGovern’s nearest competitor ap- pears to be Levi H. Bancroft. Next to Philipp were W. H. Hatton and A. H. Dahl, both La Follette adherents. The vote throughout the state was probably not more than 50 per cent of the registration. Little notice was taken of the “second choice” feature of the ballot. % In the congressional districts where there were contests, Thomas K. Kos- ney, Democratic incumbent, was re- nominated in the Ninth, as was W. J. Cary, Republican, in the Fourth. James H. ‘Davidson, former con- gressman, is conceded the nomina- tion on the Republican ticket in the Sixth district. Returns from the First 1 and Ninth, where Democratic and Re- publican contests respectively are on, nothing definite in the way of returns has been received. Senator La Follette’s candidates ap- pear to be out of the running, Thom- as Morris for senator running low on the ticket and A. H. Dahl for govern- or being far down in the list. There was no rivalry in the Social- ist party. Diarrhoea Quickly Cured. “I was taken with diarrhoea and Mr. Yorks, the merchant here, per- suaded me to try a bottle of Cham- berlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarr- hoea Remedy. After taking one dose of it I was cured. It also cured others that I gave it to,” writes M. E. Gebhart, Oriole, Pa. That is not at all unusual. An or- dinary attack of diarrhoea can al- most invariably be cured by one or two doses of this remedy. For sale by All Dealers. Vienna, via Rome, Sept. 3.—Lem- berg has fallen. g The Austrian army, which has been fighting in front of the Galician capi- tal, has been ‘withdrawn. It did not enter the city, as the general staff de- sired to avold any general bombard- | s ment, and the defending force was |§ withdrawn to .the south. The eighth day of the great battle, which now extends from the Dneis- ter to the Prussiap,.frontier, finds the Austrian army outnumbered and hard pressed. It is very plain that Russia has abandoned every offensive movement against the Prussians in an effort to crush the entire Austrian army at one blow. There are not less than 2,000,000 Russians facing the 1,000,000 Austrian troops in this great battle., As a re- sult the Austrian lines have been compelled to give way at certain points. s The most serious reverse, however is at Lublin, because the abandon ment of the positions there has en- abled the Russians to isolate the Aus- trian forces in Russian Poland and they are now greatly outnumbered. The casualties are appalling. Both sides have suffered terribly. The ar- tillery fire is described in messages from the front as annihilating. Whole | % brigades have’been mowed down. But there has been no time either to bury the dead or to collect the wounded. They lie Wwhere they fell and the tide |8 of battle has surged backwards and forwards over them. SAY AUSTRIANS LOST FIVE THOUSANG DEAD St. Petersburg, Sept. 3.—Reports of another victory over the Austrians has been received, supplementing those over the Austrians near Lem- berg and along ‘the Russian-Poland frontier. The war office announces the Rus sian left wing, operating from its po- sition on the Dneister, captured a sup posedly impregnable Austrian posi- tion that was heavily garrisoned. The official announcement states the Russians charged the Austrian position at the point of the bayonet and swept over the entrenchments, routing the Austrian troops. Five thousand Austrians were left dead on the field and the Russians captured thirty-two big guns and more than 1,000 prisoners, including the “Austrian géneral in command, the war office says. As a result of this success the Rus sian left is now co-operating with the center and the rertreat' of the Aus trians is seriously menaced. GERMANS 0CCUPY “TOWN IN POLAND London, Sept. 3.—A dispatch to the Daily News from Rome says: “Besides advancing in East Prussia the Russians.are also invading Ger- many in Northern Galicia, their ob- jective being Moenigshutte, in Prus- sian Silesia, Whence presumably they %ill march on Berlin via Breslau.” Berlin announces that “German and Austrian troops have occupied Lodz, the largest manufacturing center ir Russian Poland, and the battle north ward from Lemberg is continuing.” GERMAN TROOPS ON MOVE Government Transports Soldiers From Interior Forts to Front. Copenhagen, Sept. 3.—Advices from Berlin indicate that the German troop movements continue. It is said all train schedules have been abandoned “for the present™and the military are again in control of traln movements. It is understood this is due to the desire to send to the front troops heretofore held in interior forts whose places have been taken by the landsturm. Staff.
