Paris, Aug. 15.—The French army has. won a sweeping victory in the Vosges mountairis, according to an official government announcement. The German column from Mols- heim, it is-stated, attempted to retake the St. Marie ~and Le Bon Homme passes, which were taken by the French a week ago. The German attack was in force, ac- cording to the report, but the French had mounted artillery at all the ap- proaches and the Germans failed ut: terly in an attempt to storm the French positions. According to the reports made- pub- fic at the war office one entire di- vision with artillery was trapped and after being badly cut up by a deluge of fire from the rapid-fire guns was forced to surrender. This victory is declared to have taken place near the entrance to St. Marie pass. Skirmishing Along Whole Front. It is considered -certain that the fighting in the départment of Meurthe et Moselle continues, but all particu- lars are withheld by the government. The only reference permitted was in a statement that skirmishes along the entire front continue. In every engagement the superiority of the French artillery and cavalry has been thoroughly demonstrated, it was stated by the war office. The French government has made the direct charge that Germany is violating the neutrality - of Switzer- land. It clalms that numerous German mounted patrols, routed by French columns, have crossed the border into Switzerland.
