FOUR SHIPS REPORTED ESUNK Rumered Battle- Off Engiish cuast STRICTZST SECRECY IN "'“"!BIAL CIRCLES Story of Enzagement Reaches New York in Private Cable- gram From- Abroad, New York, Aug. 10.—Private cable advices received here report that a flotilla of German torpedo boats has attacked British warships in the Humber, the waterway to Hull, on the east coast of England, sinking four of them. The report adds that “a num- ber of German torpedo boats were lost.” These advices, closely following the statement of the British admiralty that the first news of the war might be unfavorable, indicate there has been more serious contact between the naval forces of Germany and Eng- land than those officially announced by the admiralty. The private report would indicate that vessels other than torpedo boats were involved in the engagement and that some of the more powerful boats have fiered damage. it is possible the Drit’sh admiralty had knowledge of this naval engagement when the prediction was made by Mr. Churchill, The private advices fail to state the time the reported engagement took place and the number of dead and wounded is not included in the dis- pateh, ON STHztTS CF AE‘J'NERF Belgian Troops Parade With German Helmets on Bayonets. KAISER'S TROOPS ARE SLOWLY ADVANCING Belgian Losses Said fo Be About One-Fourih That of. Their Amagonlsts. Brussels, Aug. 10.—When his de- mand for a twenty-four-hour armis- tice to “collect the wounded and bury the dead” was refused General von Emmich, the German commander, or- dered his entire army against Liege. The Seventh, Ninth and Tenth corps are engaged and the battle line em- braces the entire chain of the Liege fortifications. The slaughter is terrible as the Belgian fire is deadly. The Germans are advancing over open spaces that have been accurately mapped and the range determined by the Belgians. German field artillery, mortars and siege guns are in action, pouring thousands of exploding shells into the Belgian fortress. General Goudneur said the request for an armistice was intended to per- mit the Germans to hurry up two ad- ditional army corps thai were press- ing forward from Cologne. He says the Germans have been out- witted at every point to date. The Belgians have apparently fall- en back defeated and whenever the Germans have rushed forward they have been trapped. This ruse has worked several times, he claims. In addition several regiments of German cavalry, who had managed to cross the Meuse, were surprised by Belgians and literally cut to pieces. Those not killed or wounded were forced to surrender. General Goudneur reported to. the war office that up to the present the entire- Belgian losses have totaled only 8,000 men in killed and wound- ed as against 30,000 to the Germans. Germans Continue Advance. The Germans are reported as con- tinuing their advance en masse de- spite the heavy losses sustained. 1L is_believed here they desire to overwhelm the - Belgian forces by sheer weight of numbers. It is be- lieved the German advance is being led by portions of the Seventh army corps, which is commanded by Gen- eral Eimmen Ditmaler and by the flower of General von Emmich’s Tenth corps, with the Ninth corps, that has already borne the brunt of the fight and ‘suffered heavy losses, held in re- serve. That the Germans intend to capture Liege is indicated by the re- ports that . further reinforcements have been brought up. In addition other German ‘armies are moving to reinforce the army that invaded Luxemburg. The French forces are moving through Belgium as rapidly as possi- ble and it is reported at the war office that the advance guard of~ 200,000 Frenchmen have already effected a junction with the Belgian army at a point not made public. It is known that French and Ger- man skirmishers have beén in contact at Marrehan and this is believed here to be the prelude to serious fighting there. The Germans are cnntinulng their display of wonderful bravery. In the face of the fire from the fort guns they have been steadily pushing their lines forward and, although repulsed in general charges;-have been able to bring their artilery much closer to the Belgian forts. AUSTRIANS DRIVEN FROM SERVIAN SOIL Nish, Servia, Aug. 10.—Not a single Awstrian “soldier is now on Servian soil, it was stated-at the war office. “The Austrians have been repulsed at Semendra and all other points. The crown prince, heading the main division of the Servian army, has as- sumed the offensive, directing a de- termined attack against the Austrian army. It was officially announced that a [Servian army already has occupled Foticha, in Bosnia. Meet Death in A!Qemrfllnn Qq Cross ‘Railway Tracke. ' Glassboro, N.
