HAITIANS IGNORE Warring Factions in Island | Continue Fighting. . _INTERVENTION DISCUSSED 8ecretaries Bryan and Daniels Confer on Question of Possible, Landing of Marines Now. Assembling In Force at Guantanamo, Cuba. ‘Washington, July 24.—More de- cisive fighting at Puerto Plata, on the morthern coast of the Dominican re- public, was forecast in a dispatch from Captain Eberle of the cruiser ‘Washington, saying that the federal gunboat Independencia had anchored six miles east of town. General Vasquez also had arrived with a small body of fresh federal BPOODS. wisresistn s e ¢ <Captain Eberle reported only desul- tory firing had been in progress dur- ing the past few days, but that the lighthouse there had been damaged by rifle firing between the revolution- ary factions. Possibility of American interven- tion in Haiti and Santo Domingo to restore peace continued to be an ab- sorbing topic of discussion in admin- istration circles. Late official dis- patches regarding the situation in the revolution torn republics gave but lit- tle hope that the contending elements in the two countries would be able to ,estore order. "i“j’,‘. S LRt T Gravity Is Increased. The gravity “of the situation was in- creased by refusal of the warring fac- tions in Haiti to cease fighting, despite the American government’s warnings, and failure to settle the Dominican revolution by diplomacy. The question of a possible move- ment of marines into Haiti was up for discussion at a conference between Secretaries Bryan and Daniels. Ad- vices from Cape Haitien of further fighting, with increased dangerto for- eigners, were believed to forecast prompt action by marines being con- centrated at Guatanamo. With five full regiments of marines now afloat on expeditionary work, in addition to the many men of the same service scattered throughout the Philippines, Guam and elsewhere, the marine corps is having” difficulty in meeting the demands made upon it for a full-fledged army to carry out ‘the policies of the administration in regard to Haiti and San Domingo. iy _ ¢ FEELS SURE OF RE-ELECTION McDermott of. lllinois Candidate to Succeed Himself. ‘Washington, July 24.—That James T. McDermoctt looked into every angle of his case before resigning to es- cape expulsion by the house for his connection with the lobby scandal be- came more apparent when he in- formed the Illinois delegation he not only would be a candidate for elec tion to the next congress, but also would run for the vacancy caused by his withdrawal. If elected to fill the vacancy Meiler- mott will draw his salary just as if he never had resigned. Thus he will have escaped expulsion, obtained the political advantage he expects to ac-|j crue from his speech of resignation. and pocket the entire salary, while giving himself a vacation from his duties- during the remainder of this session. MAKES TRIP IN ROWBGAT Injured Man Taken 500 Miles to Have Legs Cut Off. Moore was repairing an engine in a small steamboat on the Porcupine river ten days ago when |3 the machinery started, mangling both his legs. He was placed in a rowboat and taken 500 miles down the river to Fort Gibson, where the post surgeon performed the operation.
