A McDermott of Illinois Re-| Attompt Made to Incite His signs Seat in Congress. Guard to Mutiny. WOULD llAVEMBEEN OUSTED | GOES WITHOUT CEREMONY| Tells Reporters In Final Interview That He Never Used President Wil son’s Name—Jamaijoa Destination of Latest Presidential Exile From Moexico. ‘Member ef Lower House Was Accus- . ed by Celonel Mulhall, Star Witness in Lobby Probe, ef Receiving Meney . From Varioue Sources. ‘Washington, July 22.—In the face of certain expulsion by the house on ‘Thuraday if he should permit a vote on, his guilt in connection with the lobby scandal exposed & year ago, ‘Representative James T. MoDermott of Chicago resigned from the house of representatives, effective at once. Martin M. Mulhall, star, witness ‘in the lobby probe, charged ‘that McDer- mott permitted him to use his con- gressional frank for circulating mat- ter for the National Association of Manufacturers and that McDermott declared he had received $7,500 from :local pawnbrokers to work against the federal loan shark law and a $2,- 000 campaign contribution from a Chi- cago brewers’ association. . McDermott's defense was that mon- ey recelved from the pawnbrokers was in the nature of personal loans and that the brewers had contributed oaly $500 out of personal friendship. He denied a charge by Mulhall that be had forged Harold F. McCormick’s name to a check for $250. The majority of the investigating committee recommending censure re- ported McDermott guilty of acts of grave impropriety, unbecoming the distinguished position he holds, and added that “his training and asso- ciatjons have not given him the ethical perceptions and standards relative to public office that usually characterize pubjic men.” Mr. McDermott reached his conclu- slon to avold a vote on his culpability following an announcement by Repre- sentative Floyd of Arkamsas that he ‘would call the McDermott case up on Thursday for final disposition. TO BE ERECTED IN NEW YORK Friends Plan Statue in Honor of Mme.| Nordica. New York, July 22.—Friends of the late Mme. Nordica have enlisted the ald of prominent musicians and music lovers in a plan to erect a heroic statue of the diva in Central park. 8hould a statue to Madame Nordica be erected it will be the only one of a woman in a park in New York and, accprding to a recent investigator, one .n:e&:ree women in the United States. Puerto’ Mexico, July 32.—An at tempt to incite the presidential guard to mutiny and to assassinate Gen eral Huerta and General Blanquet the entire " presidential party to the British cruiser Bristol and the Huer- ta family’s sudden departure for Ja- maica on the German cruiser Dres- den. A scare occasioned by a report that the Comstitutionalists threatened to attack the town prevailed, though laughed at. But much more serious in import was the other report, which resulted in the arrest of a lieutenant, a sergeant and a citizen. These re- ports, coupled with the fact that vir- tually all the government troops had been withdrawn from Puerto Mexico to the eapital, led Generals Camerena | the country. The going of Huerta was devoid of demonstrations. There was no crowd of any sort along the river bank when he went away or prior to the sailing of the Dresden. It had been planned but there was no review. It was ex- pected that he would make a sort of farewell address, but there was no ad- dress. Just His Black Cigarette. When Huerta went aboard "the cruiser he carried nothing except his black paper cigarette, Huerta's face lightemed somewhat when the correspondents approached and he began to talk to them. “But there is absolutely nothing I want to say to you,” he said. “What about Bryan? What do you think of him?” asked one man. “I want to say nothing whatever about him,” replied the former dicta- tor. ‘Another asked him about President Wilson. “Mr. Wilson is president of the United States,” he sald, “and ag such I respect him. I must be_careful ‘what I say about him, too,.for, let ms re- mind you, that in all this affair I hive never. officially mentioned his name. The nearest I came to:it was in my note of resignation, and then only by Inferenqe. 2 “‘Oh, yes, yes, he has spoken .of me many times, indeed. He has been kind enough to send me messages, but I never felt like using his name.” DEMANDS REBEL GOMPACT Carbajal. Will Not Surrender Uncon- ditionally. Washington, July 22.—Provisional President Carbajal does not intend to surrender unconditionally to General Carranza and will concentrate his mil- itary force and resist an invasion rather than permit the Constitution- alists to enter Mexico City without agreements not to wreak vengence on the lives or property of those who supported General Huerta. This was the tenor of information from authoritative sources in-Mexico City to Washington diplomats. It pro- duced a feeling of pessimism in some quarters ‘over the possibility of .an amicable settlement of the revolution. Emilio Rabasha, head of the delega- tion which represented General Huer- ta at the Niagara conference, arrived here and discussed the situation first with the South American mediators and then at the Mexican embassy with Jose Castellot, personal repre- sentative of Carbajal. ASK PROTECTION FOR MAJOR Officlals Intercede in Behalf of Al- leged Plotter. Augua Prieta, Sonora, July 22.— General S. Alavaredo, commanding the Constitutionalist forces at Guaymas, has been'telegraphed by military of- ficlals here invoking protection —for Major Carlos Plank, held in the Her- mosillo prison “since his arrest Sa urday. Major lek was arrested by order of General Jose M. Maytorena, ac- cused of complicity in a plot against that officer. Plank’s friends fear he 18 to be executed before there can be any action for his release. It is ad. mitted by Plank’s friends that he waa active politically against Governoi Maytorena.
