OUTLAW LEAGUE WINS IN COURT Ten-Day Clause in Players’ Contracts Iilegal. FEDERALS ARE JUBILANT Declare Decision Means the Addition of Many Stars to Their Playing Corps—Ruling of Lower Tribunal Is Reversed. Chicago, July 17.—The federal “league scored its first big legal vic- tory in its war on organized baseball ‘when the appellate court held the ten- day clause in the ball players’ con- tract-null and void. The ruling was given in a court action which re- versed a superior court decision en- Joining Pitcher George M. Johnsonm, the Winnebago Indian, from playing with the Kansas City Federals. The injunction, issued by Judge Foell in the superior court, and sarv- ed on Johnson while he was partici- pating in a game here, was granted at the request of the Cincinnati Na- tionals, whose ranks Johnson left to Jjoin the outlaw Federals. Johnson, before he signed with his new associates, gave the Cincinnati club the same notice of his leaving that his contract with it required the club to give. Ten days after he had given the notice he joined the Fed- erals. Federal league officials here were pleased with the decision and de- clared that it would result in the ad- dition to thelr playing corps of dozens of stars. At the same time it is said the ruling gives ball players a great leverage in making demands from the clubs. Counsel for the Cincinnati club says Judge Foell’s injunction technical- ly ‘stands. Ten days are allowed in which to file a petition for a rehear- ng in the appellate court and mean- while Johnson cannot play with the Felerals, it is said. RIVAL GANGSTERS BATTLE IN OMAHA Four Persons Fatally Shot in Two Encounters, : -Omaha, July 17.—Four persons were fatally shot during two fights between rival gangsters, in one of which 300 men and boys engaged, and which brought riot calls to.police headquar- ters in each instance. The four fa- tally hurt are Nels Lind, aged sixteen; Fred_Schroeder, aged thirty-five, for- mer city councilman; Peter Schroeder and William Rapp. All four received one or more bul- leta through the body, and all are sald by physicians to be fatally injured. The first trouble started between gangs from Omaha and South Omaha. Lind was shot through the abdomen and taken to a hospital unconscious. Several others recelved dangerous wounds from bricks and stones. Half an hour later three ambulances and a squad of patrolmen were called to Thirtieth and Pacific streets, where the other three men were found in a dying condition. According to Rapp he and-the Schroeders were attacked by some Italian laborers who did all the shooting. ADDITIONAL WANTS » TO0 LATE TG CLASSIFY FOR RENT—Nice room, well fur- nished, good light.
