Joillard nave been appointed receivers for the H. B. Claflin company, one of the biggest dry ‘goods firms in the world. Bond was fixed at $500,000. A1 equity suit first was filed by John C. Eames, acting as a friend for the H. B. Claflin company. This ac- tion' evidently was taken by prear- ranged agreement. It was on this petition that Federal Judge Hand ap- pointed the receivers. i Bankruptcy proceedings then were begun by three men claiming debts of $731, $3,310 and $28,370. A third suit was filed by W. P. Odell, charging that the subsidiary manufacturing company of the Claflin concern is indebted to him to the ex- tent of $500,000 and also asking in- voluntary bankruptcy proceedings. It is stated that thirty-five big New York banks hold paper of the H. B. Claflin company and that probably 2,000 banks in different parts of the country handle its business. The Associated Merchants, the United Dry Goods company and their controlled companies were said not to be directly involved, but when the stock exchange opened’' one of the first sales was a block of 400 shares of Unifed Dry Goods preferred stock, which sold at 70, twelve points under the previous day’s closing price. The asscts of the Claflin company| are estimated at $40,000,000 and the liabilities at $35,000,000. The com- pany controls or is affiliated with some thirty retail stores throughout the United States and it was the en- dorsement of their paper, held by more than 3,000 banks, here and in interfor cities, that caused the crash. and Operating Engineers will hold its annual convention in Peoria in September.
