W. Lakin and W. R. Mackenzie pulled off a great stunt of “team- work” in getting out a good attend- ance -at the Business Men’s meeting Monday afternoo: Bemidji and A. A. White are mak- ing preparations to show .each other off. Our- citizens will help with the preparations and turn out with the band when the show begins. Why not move to Bemidji, Messrs. White, Irving and Mueller? Bixby and Callihan may come also. They’re made of the right kind of boostiug material, Bemidji’'s Commercial club presi- dent has already demonstrated that he can deliver the ‘“goods.” ' Iie would be a fit man to head a Com- mercial club in this city of 1,000 members and it looks as if this dream may soon be realized. He is heartily in favor of a club, of, for and by the people. Injury Sure To Come. There are more than two hundred automobiles on the streets of Bemidji every day. This fact alone demon- strates the great possibilities of ac- cidents and serious injuries. There are expert drivers, good drivers and ‘poor drivers who have charge of the powerful machines which daily trav- el our streets, but one is just as like- ly as the other to run down some un- fortunate person through careless- ness on the part of the man at the wheel or the pedestrian. But here is the greatest danger, and one which is sure to bring grief to some Bemidji father and mother before many more days are history. Boys and girls rang- ing in years from tiny tots to twelve and fourteen years have acquired the habit of running in front of an ap- proaching car, “just for the fun of it.” They hide articles in the sand to see the wheels run over them, sometimes glass and nails. Should one of these little fellows, simply out of fun, trip and fall, the brakes fail to work properly, a valuable lesson would be taught. But why take this method of doing away with the habit, when Dby just a little effort on the part of the parents the danger can be entirely eradicated. It is a matter which causes every automobile own- er anxiety. And while we are dwal- ling on the proposition of auto- mobile safety, wouldn’t it be a good idea to suggest to parents that small boys and girls, who cannot touch the brake and clutch without getting down from the driver’s seat, be al- lowed to drive cars only when ac- companied by an older person. Safety first. A Greater Bemidji. It was surely encouraging to those who are most interested in the pro- gress and welfare of Bemidji to have such a large attendance at the Irving meeting of yesterday afternoon. The Commercial club rooms were pletely filled with citizens of the city, every business, trade and occupation being represented. It demonstrated that there is not a business man in Bemidji who is not willing to take off his coat and work for anything which he believes will be of benefit to the city. The talk of Mr. Irving has already had its effects, and he spoke the truth when he said that should the Commercial club not ac- <ept his membership- campaign pro- position that the city would profit anyway. He brought out and im- pressed the idea that without organi- zation, co-operation and a tendency to go after things, a city is sure to be left behind. These are three of the things which have made Be- midji the progressive Mttle city that it is today, and with added energy and enthusiasm, its future growth and progress is assured.
