Its chief accomplishment was the passage of a bill appropriating $1,000,- 000 to meet expenditures of the mili- tia in the sirike zone. The clause preventing the payment of militiamen who were also employes of the coal companies was eliminated. Of the 165 enlisted militiamen who participated in the battle of Ludlow, when two women, six men and eleven children were killed. 126 were employes of coal companies. This was shown by the rosters of the two companies sent to the senate by Adjutant General Chase. Testimony regarding the Ludlow battle was taken from enlisted men of the two companies during the day's session of the general courtmartial in progress at the state rifle range near Golden. Sergeant P. N. Cullen of Company B testified the militiamen arranged for a battle “in anticipation of trouble” He insisted, however, that the strikers fired the first shots. (Continuea from Page 1.) as the cranberry marshes in Wiscon- sin and the East. Most of these marshes are held by small ridges of glacier drift which were deposited there by the great ice sheet which formed over this northern country centuries ago. These ridges are ex- ceptionally valuable for. the raising of potatoes and small grains. Of the area of wet lands a greater portion has a rish black muck or vegetable mold top soil, with a clay sub-soil and is one of the most productive soils when drained. Analysis of Soil. The general analysis of the soil of Beltrami county shows approximate- ly,” nitrogen, 0.137 per cent, phos- phoric acid, 195 per cent, and potash, 0.7564 per cent. From this it would be safe to conclude that Beltrami county soil shows aboundant supply of food for any farm crop. There are places where grains will do bet- ter than vegetables and places where vegetables will do better than grains but in all cases nature has stored up in these lands a supply of plant food that will last forever, if put un- der the proper tillage, and these lands will withstanq continuous cropping without any danger of de- pleting the fertility of the soil af- ter they are reclaimed. The average cost of reclaiming these lands has ‘been about $1.32 per acre including a read to marget. There are many acres of unsettled lands yet:in this county and it is estimated that in five years .{Bel- trami county will more than double its population and valuation.” For Sale.
