A man soon learns how popular ‘he really is when he runs for office and in the case of Julius Block run- nig for the office of state auditor there’ll be no exception. J. A. O. Preus, the man whom the people are going to elect state auditor next fall is to have additional op- position in the nature of a “Block.” Step over it “Jake,” we believe you can do it without stumbling. Wonder if Uncle Sam could se- gure the services of Villa with his gang to quell the riots in Colorado? He ought to be turned loose en the ‘Colorado State Militia who seem to be working for “John D.” They are ac- eused of acting like a bunch of ban- @its instead of attempting to defend the rights of the people. If it were not for the women of Colorado we wonder how far things would have gone before Governor Ammons of that state would have had courage enough to summon federal aid. It took the women of that state to tell the governor that John D. Rockefell- er did not own Colorado, and that if he did not get busy they would. Col- orado’s reputation is at stake. They have placed a black spot “upon the American flag and it will take more wealth than John D. possesses. ‘o erase it. Should Be Teught Trade A boy should be taugh g trade, a specialty. No matter Wow rich his parents may be or how much he may be expected to inherit, we all agree that a substantial knowledge upon which he can fall back and earn a living is an excellent foundation for any young man. Business men and sociologists and all the rest of the thinking world who know enough about the vicissitudes of life to do good straight thinking and come to solid conclusions of life agree upon this—a young man who knows a trade or has been specially trained has something solider than a bank account underneath him. He can always get a living, says the Winona || and visitors. It produces better transportation facilities, improv- ed hygienic conditions and more adequate and less expensive lv- ing quarters and food supplies. It develops artistic taste, civic pride and patriotism; it makes better citizens and artisans; it creates health, comfort and happiness; it helps to increase the population and to produce industrial pros- perity. City planning.is a busi- ness proposition of the first im- portance. It is real civilization.— Frank Koester. Pittsburgh Fog Prevention, Scientists are experimenting im Pitts- burgh for the prevention of fogs. The French method used in Lyons, France, has been tried. It consists of covering the river with a thin, ilm of ol which acts as a blanket and keeps the fog from enveloping the city in cold weath- er, for the humidity produced by. the evaporation of the three rivers in Pitts- burgh is invisible in high temperature, but condenses and forms a fog as the | thermometer lowers. The experiments have determined that a coating of ofl of about 079 gallon per 113 acres of water will check a fog. Perhaps $28.95, per day will be the cost of maintaining: this-method during the average sixty: two days each year when Pittshuzgh, has no daylight. The rivers w, this city are rathe wift flowing, so. that trouble is anticipated in keeping the oil film in place.
