Mackenzie, Sec. of the Northern Minnesota Development As- sociation, and you will have a man all factions can get out and fight for without stepping on one another’s toes, not to mention corns.—Clear- brook Journal. Seeks Promotion Representative P. H. McGarry of Walker has announced himself as a candidate for the state senate from the Fifty-second district, to succeed Senator Dan Gunn of Grand Rapids, who has declined to try for reelection. The district consists of Ttasca and Cass counties only. Mr. McGarry, who has servéd two terms in the state house of representatives, has it is gen- erally believed in his district, earned the promotion he asks. He was one of the “live wires” of the house and was, without question, as strong an individual booster of the interests of Northern Minnesota as there was in either branch of the legislature. He was untiring in his efforts to get legislation through that would bene- it the northern part of the state, and was not only author of some of the most important bills. presented in the house, but was actively working for measures introduced by others which were for the.good of Northern Min- nesota. Mr. McGarry was joint au- thor of the law to facilitate the sale of foreign bonds held by the state 80 that the money ‘thus tled up could be invested in local development. An- other important measure of which he, together with Representative Dan O’Neill of Thief River Falls—who is also seeking to be elected to the state senate—was author was the proposed constitutional amendment to create a revolving fund for the building of roads and firebreaks on state land. In short, he 1ook & iéading part in. th biisiness of legislation ‘and was re- gdrded as a very strong man. It {g believed that he will be easily elected to the senate, IS SRR R R R SRR E T & ¥ EDITORIAL EXPLOSIONS - * R SRR e S A state official who fills his posi- tion satisfactorily is Walter J. Governor - Eberhart’s - efflclency commission seems to be making an honest effort to devise a business sys- tem by which ithe great state of Min= nesota can be run without a waste of, ‘the people’s money.—St. James Plain- dealer. £ gl Half of the candidates:are . de- nouncing the state's invisible govern- ment, but none of them are stepping 'aside voluntarily. to give someone a clear fleld against its head. .Human- ity was every selfish and candidates are humans, despite all that is sald for and against them.—Virginia En- iterprise. —_—— The straw that broke the camel’s back. ‘There is not a day or the ar- rival of a mail that we do not receive @& demand for newspaper space—gra-| tis. Invariably the solicitors fail to add the P.-S., please find' enclosed, The general public fails to compre- hend that newspaper space is the publisher’s stock in trade. The prin- ciple is the same, for an individual | to go to a grocery and ask for a dol- lar’s worth of sugar gratis, or to ask 2 man who has rooms for rent to get the free use of a room for a time for some worthy cause. The question arises: Where shall we draw the line? There is, as a matter of fact, a portion of the matter received that is of .interest to the public and neces- sarily should be published, and as a rule is published. What shall we do with the residue? This “bread on the water” business possibly is all right to run a Sunday school, but it don’t go far in running a print shop. —Remer Record.
