FORMER PREMIER OF CHINA 1S POISONED General Chao Ping Chun Sup- posed Victim of Plot. Tientsin, China, Feb, 28.—Assassi- nation by poison is belleved to have brought about the death here of Gen- eral Choa Ping Chun, military govern- or of the province of Chili and former premier under President Yuan Shi Kai, The Chinese statesman was ill only a few hours. General Chao Ping Chun, was a na- tive of Honan and was one of the president’s staunchest supporters. He was police prefect at Tientsin when he attracted the attention of Yuan Shi Kai, then viceroy of Chill. Short- ly arterward he was given a post in the ministry of the interior. After a period of unemployment ia 1908 and 1910 he was appointed min- ister of the interior by Yuan Shi Kai in 1911, and this was confirmed by the national council at Nanking after the abdication of the emperor., He was acting finance minister and acting premier early in 1912 and in September of that year became pre- mier by election and held the office till July, 1913. Trinidad, Colo.,, Feb. 28.—Interest in the Southern Colorado strike swung from the investigation by a congres- slonal committee to the arrest of Will- fam Diamond, local treasurer of the United Mine Workers, on charge of alding desertions of the militia and having government property in This possession. General John Chase, militia com- mander, will turn him over to the United States authorities. It is al- leged Diamond had uniforms for which he had given soldiers citizens’ clothes. The congressional investigators con- tinued to hear operators’ witnesses, who denied stories told by union men that peonage exists in the strike dis- trict and that state militiamen have been cruel to strikers. Rome, Feb. 28.—The intention of Italy to participate officially in the Panama exposition at San Francisco Wwas communicated to Thomas Nelson Page, United States ambassador to Italy. The notification to the ambassador, however, differs considerably from that made to Ira Nelson Morris, the commissioner from the exposition, which was absolutely unconditional. The note to Ambassador Page con- tains the reserve clause that Italy could not exercise the friendly act of participating in the exposition if in the meanwhile the American immigra- tion bill should be passed with clauses such as that calling for the carrying of American health officials on board Italian steamers.
