Converging on Enemy’s Stronghold Show Strong Inclination to Keep at a Safe Distance. Peking, Feb. 23.—The bandits led by White Wolf massacred 1,300 men, women and children when they sack- ed Liunchow, province of Nganhwei, on Jan. 29. White Wolf has a force “of 2,000, half of whom are armed with modern rifles. Hancock, Mich,, Feb. 23.—With & $6 bill, said to have been given him by a member of the congressional inves- tigating committee, tucked in his pocket, Herbert G. Schamm, an im- ported strikebreaker, who testified in behalf of the miners ‘in the.strike probe here, is en route to his home in Bay City, Mich,, to join his wife and three youngsters. Schamm’s story, told in the inquiry into alleged conditions of peonage in the copper country, touched the hearts of the the congressmen and corrobo- rated stories of other witnesses for the miners. Out of work, he went to Detroit to seek employment as a machinist, he said, and when his search proved fruitless and he became penniless he joined a party of strikebreakers en route to the copper country under the impression that the strike was prac- tically ended. “I thought it was a free country up here, but I found out differently,” he told the committee. “Guards keptme in a bunkhouse and wouldn’t let me go off the company property. In- stead of being able to send my wife some money they told me after I had worked twenty-six days that I owed the company money. All I want is a chance to-get back to my family."” Would Bar Crime Pictures.
