There were some gowns out last night, even the men folke noticed. It takes a Charity Ball to produce the ‘“glad rags.” Dr. H. L. Willlams, for many yeavs coach of the Minmesota university football eleven, says that he likes the present gridiron rules, which, we suppose, should indicate that the Gophers ought will have a winning team this year. During the last sev- eral years U football, baseball and basketball teams have been more or less of a joke, and such colleges as Nebragka, lowa and others have been able to win from them with apparent ease. Would be kind of nice to have ‘another .of those aggregations we could bet on not omly for the sake of loyalty. That the Minnesota State Board of Immigration advertising car is mak- ing a hit in Nebraska is eyldenced by the optomistic reports sent in to the Immigration Department by Hon. Frank M. Eddy, in charge of the car. Mr. Eddy says, “There {8 going to be a tremendous immigration from Neb- braska to Minnesota the coming sea- son. A great many people intend to try their luck in a new fleld and no one talks of any place but the North State.” In speaking of the prices of land in the country west of Lincoln, he quotes that from $125 to $176 per acre s about the ruling price, and adds that , “if land in this vicinity is worth $150 per acre, land in the Mbetter portions of Minnesota ought to be ‘worth $450 peracre.” Mr, Eddy glves a moving picture exhibition in all the towns where It i8 possible to show the plctures and he reports that packed halls are the rule. Mov- Ing plcture shows are given in the af- ternoon to especlally accommodate the farmers, That a town without saloons is better off Is @ matter of record and the citizens of such a community would not under any condltions vote back the licensed parlors. That wities with saloons are prospering and making rapid strides is also a matter of record and the people who reside In such communities would under no condition vote them out. It is also a fact that some cities have had experiences of being dry one year and wet the next and now have finally settled down to either one or the other as the case might ‘be, content In their own particular environment. Some remain wet and some dry and under no condition would they again vote to change. some day Bemidjli will be a ‘“dry” town and a prosperous one.. We all welcome this day and awalt its com- ing. Like the majority of the tax pay- ers we believe that the time is not yet here. We are all agreed.that Bemidji will feel a severe shodk, should thirty buildings be vacated, between $16,000 and $20,000 license money returned and on top of this the city fall to receive one penny of license money for the coming year, making an item of nearly $50,- 000 to be made up by the taxpayers. We admit the taxes are too high at the present stage and believe that the sudden jump necessary to over- come the saloon revenue can be avoided. The process of gradual elimination and high license will @ bring this about. It seems the sensible way to proceed and the voters of this city should carefully consider the result of so radical a change before cast- Ing their votes next Tuesday.
