HIS PAPER REPRESENTED FOR FOREIGN ADVERTISING BY THE GENERAL OFFICES NEW YORK AND CHICAGO BRANCHES IN ALL THE PRINCIPAL CITIES As candidate after candidate en- ters the gubernatorial race, Governor Eberhart grins a little harder, and -the long -expected announcement of William E. Lee has merely caused a smile. A Socialist who was prominently | spoken of as-a candidate for mayor during the recent referemndum, said that if nominated he would move from the city. Who would have blamed him? On next Tuesday morning citizens of Beltrami county who have been selected as a grand jury for the spring term of court will report for duty, and if Graham M. Torrance, county atorney, has his way about it, their service will be of short length. Not a case Is up for consideration, the last prisoner having pleaded guilty. A glance at the council ‘proceed- ings since September first will show that fifteen liquor licenses have been renewed and that on each occasion one thousand dollars has been turn- ed over to the city treasurer. Should the voters decide against the saloons at the election in two weeks, ap- proximately ten thousand dollars may have to be returned to the li- cense holders, As a weather prophet the ground- hog Is fast losing its laurels. In a Minneapolis park the keeper kept his eye on several of the animals all day Monday, but their sleep was not dis- turbed, and they seemed to care lit- tle whether the weather be cold or mild during the next six weeks. In Superior the records kept by the city engineer show that during the last five years the weather has been just the opposite to that predicted by Mr. Groundhog. J. 0. Harrls will endeavor to wrest the office of Register of Deeds from the present incumbat, C. O. Moon, at the next election, according to an announcement made in the Tenstrike Tribune. In part the Tribune says, “Mr. Harris authorized the Tribune to state that he will be candidate for register of deeds on the Repub- lican ticket at the coming election, and that he feels confident of being endorted by the people of Beltrami county. Mr. Harris’ popularity throughout the county cannot be questioned” Dead Quiet The iittle chap was playing “store’” Along with other boys; And as they romped around the floor They made a lot of noise. “Keep that store quiet,” mother said. The little chap was wise, ‘Al right,’ qouth he, “we’ll just pre- tend That we don’t advertise.” L AR R R R SRR R 8 ¥ EDITORIAL EXPLOSIONS ¥ ERHKE KKK KKK KKK KKK With the new league creating a big demand for players, how long be- fore the colleges and high schools will establish regular basball pre- paratory departments?—Princeton News. —— To the Long list' or reasons ad- vanced by Minneapolis for the loca- tion of the regional bank in that city might be added the ease with which crimes may be and are committed in that city, and the helplessness of its police to apprehend the criminals.— Foley Independent. s Minnesota’s various, development associations are to get together next month and outline a common pro- gram. It the various development associations could get together in one big organization their fleld of usefulness would be considerably en- larged, but if their various efforts can be concentrated to a common end that will be a long step in the right direction.—Virginia _ Enter- prise. —— A newspaper, no matter how small how miserably printed, or how poor- 1y edited, is the only one real agency that has the power to put a town on the map and keep it there.
