Hill, chairman of tbe Great Northern Rallway, concentrated his forces of immigratlon agents in a concerted advertising campaign for northern Minnesota at the United States Land Show in the Celiseum, Nov. 20-Dec. 8. The mation picture film of the Minnesota state Immigration commission was borrowed for the purpose, and CH!OAGO, ILL.—Nearly everybody that reads knowe Minnesota 1s the “Bread and Butter" State. three lllustrated lectures daily were delivered in the Great Northern’s exclusive lecture hall. On an average of 8,000 people attended these lectures dally during the three weeks of the land show. The moving plctures especial- ly gave a comprehensive idea of the wonderful possibilities that await the homeseeker in the logged off land sec- tions of northern Minnesota. Besldes, the motion pictures showed harvesting scenes in the Gopher State which opened the eyes of the spec- tators. Minnesota products formed a big sectlon of the Great Northern Railway’s mammoth exhibit upon the main floor of the Coliseum. 3 B. C. The trouble arose in a dispute about the death of a Basuto, which was said to have resuited from the kick of a ‘white overseer. _ Capetown, Union of South Africa, Jan. 12.—Drastic measures have been taken by the government of the Union of South Africa to prevent serious trouble arising out of the’ strike of rallway men in the Transvaal and Orange State provinces. The entire defense forces of South Africa, including the regulars and the citizens reserve, are being mobilized for the protection of property which the government believes to be threat- ened. The strikers, have tied up railroad trafiic in the Transvaal and the Or ange State, but have not yet succeed ed in interfering with transportation in Cape Colony and Natal. Thé authorities in mobilizing the forces are looking toward a much greater danger than that of the strike. They fear a possible uprising of the thousands of native laborers in the mines, some of whom have already shown signs of uneasiness. EUGENE H. GRACE IS DYING WIlI Succumb to Wound Inflicted Two Years Ago. Newman, Gg., Jan. 12.—After a two yars’ fight for life Euzene H. Grace. ‘who was_ mysterlously shot in ~his home at Atlanta in March, 1912, is dying. Physicians who have aided: him in his plucky fight since paralysis overtook him as a result of his ‘wounds, said he had but a few hours ‘to live. Mrs. Daisy Grace, wife of the dying man, after a- trial that drew ‘wide attention, was acquitted of the charge of shooting him. Grace was carried into court on a cot and there accused his wife of deliberately trying to kill him. FOR EXPORT TO AMERICA Danish Farmers to Raise Cabbage on Extensive Scale. Copenhagen, Jan. 12.—The lower rates on vegetables fixed by the new American tariff may cause a revolu- tion in the Danish cabbage industry. Farmers all over the country are starting co-operative societies for cab- bage raising and a central organiza- tion will be formed to facilitate ex- portation of the product to America. It is believed that Danish farmers will find a gold mine in the industry. Un- der the Payne-Aldrich act the tariff on cabbages was 2 cents a head. Un- der the new act it is 15 per cent ad valorem. Declares He Has No Intention of Leaving New Hampshire. Concord, N. H. Jan. 12.—At the close of his hearing for release on bail Harry K. Thaw expressed hope' of success.
