He was a graduate of West Point; had been & member of the United States army for ten years; Was a veteran of the Mexican war; for four years was governor of Ken- tucky, and in 1896 was a candidate for vice president of the United States on the goid Democratic ticket headed by Palmer. 1,206 WOMEN OUT ON STRIKE Employes of Philadelphia Hoslery Mills Quit Work. Philadelphia, Jan. 10.—A strike which started in the Taubel hosiery mill here several days ago spread to several other concerns and about 1,200 workers, all women and girls, are new on strike, according to union leaders. Women and girls struok in the Taubel mill because their wages ‘were reduced. Men textile workers at & meeting pledged themselves to see that no women of their families return to ‘woek until the differences that caused the strike are adjusted. Ban Francisco, Jan. 10.—The unem- ployed situation again took on a se- rous aspect following a fight on the street between police and unemploy- 4, during which one policeman and five unemployed men were injured. Chief of Police White has forbid- den street parades. The fight resulted from an attempt of a teamster to drive through a pa- rade of idle men. Macon, Ga,, Jan. 10.—John B, Mun- #on, president of the Georgia Southern and Florida railroad, had a narrow escape from death in a wreck near Cordele, Ga., in which two persons were killed and thirty were injured. There was a tendency among diplo- mats here to credit the rumor that Lind was instructed to censure O’Shaughnessy for his unofficial rela- tions with the Huerta government. O’Shaughnessy has unofficially attend- ed Huerta’s dinners and- receptions and he and the dictator are on appa- rently friendly terms. Preparations were made by Red Cross and army authorities to care for more wounded. Arrest Causes Sensation, Pemberton, N. J,, Jan. 10.—News of the arrest at Mobile, Ala., of Joel M.
