» R e 4 DISASTER OPENS Coroner Taking Evidence at Calumet, Mich. NOTHING NEW DEVELOPS Testimony of Witnesses Contradicts | Generally Circulated Story That Man Who Yelled “Fire” Wore an Emblem of the Citizens’ Alllance. Calumet, Mich.,, Dec. 30.—The in- quest into the cause of the Italian hall panic in' Calumet on Christmas eve, Which cost the lives of seventy- two men, women and children, held the center of interest in the copper kountry strike district. When Coro- mer William Fisher called the inquest iin the town hall the room was crowd- ed to capacity. A half dozen witnesses testified, in- oluding Mrs. Annie Clemens, leader of the Women's Auxillary of the Western Federation of Miners, the jorganization which was distributing |Christmas gifts to the children when the panic in the hall broke out. The testimony of the witnesses con- tradicted the generally circulated ru- mors that a man wearing a Citizens’ alliance button had rushed up the stairs and shouted “Fire!” and that deputies stood at the foot of the stairs and beat back those coming out of the hall. All testified to the effect that they had not seen any one wear- ing a Citizens’ alliance button come up the stairs, nor any person wearing an alliance button in the hall Woman Repudiates Story. Mrs. Clemens has been generally said to be one of those who persist- ently circulated the report that the man who gave the false alarm of fire wore an Alliance button, but on the stand she disclaimed any knowledge of that kind and asserted that she had seen no one affiliated with the Oitizens’ alliance, an organization op- posed to the strike, come into the hall, Congressman MacDonald of Calu- met has reached here from Washing- ton to look into the strike situation and the Italian hall tragedy. John B. Densmore, solicitor of the depart- ment of labor, is expected shortly. Qathering of evidence as to the identity of the men who escorted President Moyer out of Hancock Fri- day night was continued by strike leaders. The man who shouted the false alarm of “fire,” .thereby causing the panic at the Christmas tree cele- bration for the children of striking miners, is still at large. Union men intimated, however, that they have a clue to his identity and that a war- rant may be made soon. SLAYER HOLDS POSSE AT BAY Escapes From Barricaded House Un- der Cover of Fog. Pittsburg, Dec. 30.—Dodging from tree to tree and firing as he ran, Henry Rokowski, who shot and killed Constable Martin Windt and probably fatally wounded two other persons at West Homestead, a suburb, held a posse of 200 deputy sheriffs and citi- gens at bay on the hills above Mo- nongahela valley. The shots were returned, but Ro- kowski escaped through the woods te & deserted cabin, where he barricad- ed the doors and taking position at a window fired at every movement within his range of vision. A heavy fog hung over the valley and Rokowski managed to get away from his hiding place without being observed by the posse. Have Christmas Program A Christmas tree and program was held in the First Scandinavian Lu- theran church last evening and the building was crowded to the limit The program was given by the Sun- day school children and consisted of songs, drills and recitations. . Mes- dames T. S. Kolste and 1. B. Olson have drilled the children and are to ‘be congratulated upon their success. The church was decorated with trail- ing pine, evergreens, and candles. ] PRBEOF AL | |number of relatives and [y | Last Scenes from.: the Days of Pompeii Brinkman Theatre Dec. 30 and 31 MATINEE AT 3 O’CLOCK AFTERNOONS ADDITIONAL LOCALS Miss Lillie Voller of Lavinia was a eBmidji caller Monday.
