H. M. Stanton, who has beén city editor of The Tribune for the past few months, has accepted a position as city editor of the Bemidji Daily Pioneer and will leave in a day or two for Bemidji to take up the work there. ' Mr, Stanton has proved him- self ‘an able:mewspaper man in Hib- bing and his leaving is regretted both by The Tribune and the ‘people of Hibbing with when Mr. Stanton has come in contact, Mr. H. Z. Mitchell today assumed the duties of city editor of The Trib- une. Mr. Mitchell is well known in Hibbing having been with the Messa- ba Ore for some months. - He was for several years manager of the Minot Optic, Minot, N. D, ‘and was later very successful as editor of the Daily Journal-Press in his home town of St. Cloud.—Hibbing Tribune. “The King Uncrowned” Now that the tariff bill has passed comment turns to the men who:came out of ‘the contest in the Senaie with glory or insignificance. Many men of whom much was expected failed lamentably, Others new to the oper- ations of the Senate arose unexpect- edly to eminence and to establish leadership. The debate between James Hamil- ton Lewis from Illinois, and Elihu Root the Senator from New York took the high water mark of constitution- al and senatorial eloquence. The de- bate was the pride of the Senate. It was remarked upon by all Senators as a revival of the old time senator- ial glory. The galleries were quick- ly crowded, the lobbies were cram- med, and for the first time in years the Senators rushed back to their seats from committee rooms, and in | O unmoved silence-lent ‘attention and admiration to the great debate. The attack was made by Senator Root. He delivered a prepared and master- ful speech on-what he termed was the unequality 'of granting exemption to the farmer, laborer and to aicertain class of citizens who were * without great incomes. - He quoted the con- stitution and-the debates of the con- stitutional ‘convention, He delved into the philosophy ' of government to the apparent satisfaction of his side. He pleaded to an attentive and admiring:Senate. - ‘The .Republi- cans'were proud of him. ' He seemed to be a‘vietor. Then the Democratic side looked about for'a. man. - Senator " 'Lewis from lllinois was remembered as the man*whorhad': ' saved'i‘Secretary of State Bryan-at the’critical moment. All the Democratic Senators iturned to Lewis. He had no . warning of Root’s’ speech or-notice that he was tosreply;‘but her'was the:Lewis who other Séndtors knew and in him was confldence. ) " He arose and got.recognition of the Chair, - Senator Lewis: took-Sen- ator Root’s—-argument.
