Washington, Aug. 29.—Federal funds are not to be used after Jan. 1 next for the organized militia of the states unless the citizen soldiery complies with the law which declares their organizations “shall be the'same as that which is now or may here- after be prescribed for the regular army of the United States.” This order has been issued by the war department. The law was pass- ed several years ago and Secretary Garrison expresses the belief that “a sufficient time has now elapsed to enable the state more definitely to conform in organization to the regu- lar army.” “If at any time the number of com- panies in a complete regiment falls below twelve, exclusive of the ma-. chine gun company,” the order says, “the deficiency may be replaced with- in six months or the regimental or- ganization be considered as perma- nently abandoned, the officers and enlisted men of the regimental head- quarters, the headquarters , detach- ment, the mounted scouts and order- les, the machine gun company, the band, and one battalion headquarters being mustered out or otherwise dis- posed of.” .
