RAKO, Chairman of the Board. Attest: J. L. GEORGE, County Auditor. Itw 7-24 l (AUDITORS SEAL) Household Brigade. The household brigade, more fa- miliarly known as “The Guards,” which King George reviewed recently on an- nual parade, dates only from the days of Charles II.,, though Henry VII. es- tablished a roval bodyguard of 50 yeomen, and Henry VIIL formed a band of “Gentlemen Pensioumers” to protect his sacred person. The first guards were the Coldstreams, original- ly raised by Monk in 1660 and recruit- ed in the neighborhood of the village of Coldstream, near Berwick. Ten years later the Grenadiers were es- tablished, and the physical require- ments demanded in recruits for the regiment first game a meaning of strength and stature to the term “guardsman.’ Canny Traveler. Richard Harding Davis had an emusing experience while on a recent visit to England. While motoring through the country his party stopped to see an old church. The native guide was showing the party through, explaining all the points of interest after his own style. “In the far cor- ner of this 'ere church,” he said, “lles William the Conker; be'ind the organ, Where yer can't see, are tombs of Guy Fawkes, Robin 'Ood and Cardinal Wolsey. Now, sir,” he asked, address- ing Davis, “does that there guide book as I sees you ’ave in your ’'and tell yer who's lyin’ 'ere?” *“No,” re- plied Davis candidly; “the book says nothing of it, but I can guess.”—Lip- pincott’s. rchants Who Want Your Busin It matters not where you reside or what you want, the merchants below can get it for you at a price that will defy competition.
