Bursley can take a joke as well as give one. At any rate he didn’t miss his train for home. Isn’t it a funny thing. Those whom you suspected had diamonds galore have none, while others would rather pay the tax on a “Paste’ stone than deny the charge. The success of the retail mail ord- er houses is attributed, among other things, to their subtle appeal to peo- ple’s curiosity. Think that over; you will get it after a while.—Ex. The council of that city has paved the way from the Mississippi river bridge to the boundary line, and also con- structed an elegant concrete side- walk parallel to it, merely to coax us to come over and see her people oc- casionally—and we are pleased to do so. In Louisiana only $900 was spent. in eleven months for the health and safety of 76,165 wage-earners, while the postage account of the Loulstana oyster commission for one year was| $441.68. Mississippi has spent more money on paper clips for the office of is oyster commission than on. the|y protection of children who toil in that state. Edward F. Brown, spec- ial agent of the Nationa] Child Labor committee, writing in the Child La- | bor bulletin brings out these and other striking facts about the present failure to enforce child labor laws. Mr. Brown refers to “the favorite method of passing a good child labor fsi gressional Township 161 N. of Range 30 L that, the said Twnship be| law in response to an indignant pub- lic demand and then nullifying it by neglecting to provide adequate ma- chinery for its enforcement.” ‘The Child Labor Bulletin is pub- lished quarterly by the National Child Labor committee. The current number contains the proceedings of the ninth annual child labor confer- ence including a stirring call to gen- uine democracy from the pen of A. J. McKinley, “Child Wages in the Cot- ton Mills—Our Modern Feudalism.” The committee is issuing with this number of the Bulletin an index of the previous volume. This is a new feature in the committee’s publica- tion which, with its more than 400 references, should be of service to the student of child labor in thls country.
