There is one great scene, that of a Bulgarian cafe and during the action of the beautiful musical skit there are six sweet musical numbers, and Mrs. Fitzsimmons, whose stage name’ is Julia Gifford, has an excellent part which she carries well. She is one of the big stars in musical comedy and has a strong personality. The little playlet which runs over 50 minutes, is well costumed, grand groupings with dances, nicely staged and ‘there is a world of beautiful lighting, es- pecially a stone bridge scene which is lighted from the rear. Last-minute shopping is distressing and unsatisfactory. The weather is warm, the streets and shops ‘are crowd- ed,and the stocks are not nearly as fresh and attractive as they are now. 'He was to be made com- mander of an expedition that was_to ;attempt to disecover a new and short- er way to Asia, India; and the magic East. Only. that very morning Co- lumbus; tired of waiting around the Court of Spain, had set forth intend- ing to present his cause to France, with the hope that he might get aid there to pursue the great enterprise he had in view. Columbus; returned ‘ to Spain in March, 1493,'and his journey through the country to Barcelona was a triumphant march. In September of that" year ‘he sailed again, and dis- covered the Windward Islands, Jam- aica and Porto Rico. He founded a colony and returned to Spain. On his third voyage he discovered the Orin- oco. Then he was accused on false charges by men who were envious and jealous of him, and he and his brother Bartholomew -were taken back to Spain in chains. The captain of the ship on which he was brought back offered to remove the chains; but Co- lumbus answered, “No, I will wear them as a memento of the gratitude of princes.” On reaching Spain, however, he was quickly freed. His fourth voyage was to explore the Gulf of Mexico; but he was taken sick at San Lucar and lay there for several months. Broken in body and spirit he returned to Spain and died at Valladolid on May 20, 1506.
