Today is the last the editor will of- fer an editorial in that capacity and this may be taken as a personal word to those who have been reading his work for the past fifteen months. It is with many regrets that he leaves Bemidji, but there are often circum- stances over which we have no con- trol. Although he will no longer make his home in Bemidji, that does not mean that he will forget the city. No one who has ever lived here for any He will watch with great interest the work- length of time can do that. ing out of certain problems and plans which have been put before the peo- ple and which must be solved in the near future. The most important of these prob- lems, it seems to him, is that of good government. It has been his duty.ta attend the meetings of the city coun- cil and he has probably attended more than any other person in the city barring city officials and the councilmen. He knows that the pres- ent council system is wasteful both of effort and the people’s money; ‘he knows that it is impossible to fix the responsibility for any certain acts— as in the case of the city buying the street sweeper and sprinkler instead of a flusher—and he thoroughly be-|taking two boxes, I felt like a differ- lieves that a change must be made at once or the city will find itself deep- er in debt. It is already about $20,- 000 behind a cash basis. To the people of Bemidji, he rec- ommends the commission form of gov- ernment as the solution for Bemidji’s biggest problem—provided the proper men are elected. Government under any plan is possible of corruption by corrupt men. An excellent charter is being outlined by the charter com- mission and will be presented to the voters sometime within this year. There has never been a question of the plan working in the smaller cities and it is now being adopted by the cities of 100,000 and over, Next to the problem of good gov- ‘ernment, he believes is that of cheap transportation, light and heat. No transportation offer has yet been made to the city but the time is com- ing when it will be necessary to ex- tend the residence districts materially and the people must have a way to get down town and to the mills quick- ly. A car line will make the outlying districts available for homes and property will come within the pecket means of many who are homeless now. A gas proposition has been made which (he editor considers one of the best ever offered a city. Editorially he has stood for the right as it has been given him to see the right. Hissuccess in meas- uring up to the accepted standards can best be decided by the readers. As a last word the editor wishes to say that as long as he lives in St. Paul, Bemidji will have a friend in court. There may be times when he will be able to help put through a proposition and if called upon, he Although leaving, his heart is with the great north country and he will always be vitally interested in its development. A DEADLY MENACE AND PUBLIC SENTIMENT. The presence of flies Is a disgrace to any community. It is all right to en- gage in crusades to kill the beasts, but It Is far better to look to it that the breeding places are abolished. Flies breed chiefly in stable manure, street dirt and garbage. The presence of a large number of flies around any one place is a sure sign of filth being some- where in the vicinity. When people come to realize that fies mean filth and filth means erimi- pal -negligence a degree of disgrace will attach to the presence of flies around a store, restaurant, soda foun- tain or residence that will seriously Lupair fe prestige of the offender in the community The flies are quite the most danger- ous and dirtiest beasts that roam through our mysterious creation.—El Paso Herald. Thousands who suffer from back- ache and kidney complaint have tried one remedy after another, finding only temporary benefit. This is dis- couraging, but there is one kidney medicine that has earned a reputa- tion for lasting results and there is plenty of proof of its merit right here in Bemidji. Here is the testimony of one who used Doan’s Kidney Pills years ago, and now makes his testimony even stronger. Mr. Henry Revor, Ave. Bemidji, Minn., says: “I suffered from backache for weeks at a time. It seemed that I could get nothing that would relieve me. Finally, I heard about Doan’s Kidney Pills. After 808 Bemidji! The public statement I then gave, praising Doan’s Kidney Pills, still holds good. The benefit they brought, has been permanent.” For sale by all dealers. Price 50 cents.
