R, X. DENTU. XAROLD J. DANE, Editor. Taxes Boosted Again, According to the latest word from the legislature the state tax for revenue purposes for the next two years will be increased by four-tenths of a mill. In addition, the road tax will be increased by three-fourths of a mill. This means that the people of Minnesota will raise nearly $2,- 000,000 more in taxes in the next two years than during the past two. This also in spite of the fact tnat heavier taxes are levied on the rail- roads. ' Minnesota is the wealthiest state in the union yet the fact does not appear to save her people from an increasingly heavy tax burden. Nor is there apparent relief in sight-when there_is a movement to do away with - all fee offices and put the holders on salaries which are liberal to say the least. Why the state should pay from $3,000 to $7,000 a year for men who would not control half that sal- ary if out of a political job is hard to see. The people of the country, on whom the burden ultimately falls, would like to see some reduction rather than an increase in taxes. The Great Northern Plots. Last year the Great Northern rail- road entered into an agreement with many farmers in Minnesota and the Dakotas whereby the farmer worked a part of a field according to the directions of the raflroad and the other part according to his own. At threshing time the results were cer- tified to at the thresher. A booklet telling of the experiments has just been issued by the railroad. The average yield for wheat:in bushels per acre on fifty-one farms for the farmers owner plots and for the Great Northern plots last year were as follows: Farmer G.N. Minnesota .........19.41 29.86 North Dakota ......19.1 31.47 South Dakota ...... 19.25 30.66 For oats, the yields on thjrty-une farms averaged as follows:_ Farmer G.N. Minnesota .%........51.2 70.9 North Dakota .54 78.64 South Dakota ......52.6 74.77 For barley, the yield on forty-seven farms averaged: Farmer G.N. Minnesota ......... 44.65 North Dakota 50.1 South Dakota 47.37 It will be seen that in most cases the average of the Great Northern plots was sixty per cent higher than that of the plots farmed the old way. When Mr. Crane, the Great Northern agriculturist, was in Bemidji at the time of the Hill dinner, he had fig- ures which showed that some of the Great Northern plots yielded over double the rest of the field. The yields were measured at the thresh- ing machine by three men-—one for the farmer, one for the railroad and a neutral third—who certified to the result. These figures prove that the yields of the farms of the great Northwest can be increased wonderfully by scientific farming. The Great North- ern men put more time on, the pre- paration of the seed bed than did the farmer; they tested the ground and supplied -with artificial fertilizer when needed, the ingredients the soil ‘lacked; and they took better care:of {[:: their plots than the farmers did of the entire flelds. .The results at the thresher proved that the efforts had not been in vain. : The Great Northern proposes to do the same thing again this year. W: @, Schroeder’s farm has been selected {| for one of the plots. It will simply be five acres 1n one corner of a llrge’ farmed according to Mr. Schroeder’s ideas. The results on the Schroeder farm will be watched with interest but in the meantime the farmers should not forget the figures cited above. A’little more effort coupled with head work will often greatly in- crease the production of a farm, Nymore Independent. The Nymore Independent, still of eight pages but somewhlnt smaller, has again come to the exchange table. No difference what size “Dad” Pal- mer makes his sheet, it is full of in- teresting copy. A Walk to Nymore. Those who have any occasion to go around the south end of the lake know that the road to Nymore bears a heavy traffic. They know also that the sidewalk has been forn up and that foot traffic has to_share the pavement with horses, autos, etc. That a walk from the Northern Gro- cery company plant to the city lim- its is badly needed, they do not doubt. At the last meeting of the council, the building of a walk was discussed and there seemed to be a difference-of opinion as to what material should be used. Itis to be hoped that at the next. meeting of the council this dif- ference can be overcome and a good HOW’S THIS? E Zones of silence such as:that dis oovered in the Alps have been known to scientists for a long time. Somw years ago a committee conducted a series of experiments in the English channel with the loudest and most ear plercing sirens, whistles and hoot ers they could procure. It was found| that sometimes on. the clearest and culetest day a sound was unaccounts: bly inaudible at a short distance. This demonstrated conclusively the exis tence of soundless zones and incident ally suggested an explanatioh of cer tain ocean disasters. Look to Your Plumbing. You know what happens in a house in which the plumbing is in poor condition—everybody in the house is liable to contract typhoid or some other fever. = The digestive organs perform the same functions .in the human body as:the plumbing does for the house, and they should be kept in first class condition all the time.
