Statistics obtained from the post- master show that while the large cit- ies have reported an increase in pos- tal receipts through the operation of the parcel post, such has not been the case in Bemidji. Furthermore, the express companies in these cities report that their business has rallen oft twenty-five per cent. Postmas- ter Hrickson says that three times as many parcels are received in Bemidji as are sent out and that most of the incoming parcels are small. By putting these facts together it is easily seen that the secret of the matter is that the- city mail order houses are now shipping by parcel post whereas they formerly had to use the express for small packages. Bemidji has several dry goods and clothing houses which might build up a great trade in the small com- munities near here by using the par- cels post. For a radius of fifty miles they can send packages at less than the® express rates and at rates with which the city houses cannot com- pete. They can create a demand for cheap ready-to-wear -goods which have quality if they will put in the stock and then advertise it. The reason the city houses are successful in their mail order busi- uess is that they have goods at low prices and that they advertise them. The farmers are flooded with catalogues and with papers carrying ng. Minn. March_13th, 1 Try a Want Ad 12 Cent a Word===Cash Figures on Bemidji. Figures on Bemidji compiled from the federal census of 1910 arrived in the city vesterday. = They show that of the 5,099 population at that time, 2,833 were males and 2 i were fe- males. There were 2,090 native whites of native parentage—that is, with both parents born in this coun- try, 1,942 native white or mixed par- entage, and 1.056 foreign born whites. The population included ten negroes, Chinese and Indians. Of the 1,806 males of voting age in Bemidji at that time, 401, or about twenty-two per cent, were naturaliz- ed. The native whites of native par- cntage numbered 614, of foreign or mixed parentage, 515, and the for- ern born whites numbered 672, These figures show that the percentage of foreigh born whites. or men with one or both parents foreign’born is large in this city. The total population of ten years and over is given as 4,005. Of this number, twenty-eight are illiterate. One-third of the negroes, Chinese and Indians ‘are illiterate while the percentage of native whites is the smallest. The total number of per- sous from six to twenty years of age —which is taken as schoolage—was 1,395, Of this number, but 988 were in school so that the possible at- tendance ' was short about forty per cent. The attendance at Brainerd was short about thirty per cent. Be- midji had 955 dwellings and 1,030 families. Figures of this kind mean little unless carefully annalysized and compared with those of other cities of the same size. That the census is not padded when it gives Bemidji 5,~ 099 population may be seen by mul- tiplying the number of families by five and the number or awellings by five and one-half they being the ra- tios found true for the state. On the family basis, Bemidji has a popula- tion of 5,150 and the dwelling basis 5,253, : Voting strength is.one way of com- puting population. .
