A bill hag been quietly introduced in the legislature and has been as quietly reported out from committee which, if it strike a severe blow at the entire press of the state of Minnesota. This bill provides that if any newspaper publishes libelous matter, a later re- becames a, law, will traction of no avail and an action for damages stands. As the law now reads, as we un- derstand it, if libelous matter is pub- lished and later retracted, damages can be had only if the retraction did not fully wipe out any cause for act- ion. If the bill introduced~becomes a law, it will be impossible for a any which has crept into its columns. Every publisher Minnesota should use his influence to have this bill killed. It will pave the way for law suits without number and will undoubtedly It newspaper to correct error in mjure every paper. in to keep eitors from the coluwng of a paper which must the state. ‘s impossible be printed every ‘day and too often now innocent matter is considered libclous by some one. The iegislitur: should thing in its power to do every protect the press of the state and keep it free. Such legislation as this will strike the press a vital blow. . Newspane\"s are the best medium through which a state or city can become known to the outside world. Let the legisla- ture kill this bill as it will seriously hamper every publisher in the state. Annual Meeting Tonight. The annual meeting of the Com- mercial club will be held in the club rooms tonight This is one of the most important meetings of the year and deserves that attendance and in- terest of every man who has the wel- tare of Bemidji at heart. Men in business should be especially active in securing a large attendance to- night. v It Applies Here Too. The bandmaster of the Crookston band has resigned and his reason is that he was subjected to indignities when collecting the monthly contri- butions of the business men. The following editorial is taken from the Crookston Times but applies so well to Bemidji that it is reproduced. “The resignation of Bandmaster Wasshausen has caused general dis- cussion and many expressions of re- gret. Mr. Wasshausen has given clearly his reason for resigning. He dissatisfied with his salary, nor with the people of Crookston, but he does object, and he has a right to, to the humiliation caused by the at- titude of some of the confributors, who regard the collector for the band tund as a beggar, just as though the money was being used to buy bread for his family. is not “This attitude is, of course, ridicu- lous. A subscription to the band fund is a purely business proposition. The Citizens’ band of Crookston has a definite value to the 'city. Crooks- ton cannot be without a band. At the present time it has a band that has no peer in the Northwest. It is recognized, not only here, but throughout. this section, as the best organization in the band line. This is of value to Crookston. “A - subseriber - should give the amount: he subscribes -just as cheer; fully as he-pays his taxes, or, if he refuses to be a subscriber, should do so pleasantly. It is a business pro- position absolutely. As to whether the present method of supporting the band is.the best; thér@ is room . for argument. The band i5 a benefit to the entire city, and the lcost of main- tenance, justly, should be. npi-enli p_vei" the entire eity. iRy “We doubt if there is a person in Crookston who would wish to see the open air concerts abandoned. They are entertaining, furnish a fine class of amusement, and to .4 great many supply the only entertainment’ en- joyed. “We believe the gquestion of band| maintenance is one that should be taken up by the Commercial clubl and solved permanently. The com-| ing summer there will be much work for the band to do. The meeting of the grand council of the U. C. T.s| here June 12, 13, 14 will make a| heavy demand upon the services of ! the band. i “Bandmaster Wasshausen, or ! { i any | other self-respecting man, will- not submit to indignities in collecting band subscriptions. That portion oti the work isn’t properly any part of | the bandmaster’s duties, but the col- | lection was undertaken by Mr. hausen because he desired to assist in every way he could. | “As present constituted ‘a! splendid _aggregation of musicians | donate their time for the benefit of' the general public, because they be-i Wass- | at lieve it is a fine thing for Crookston | to have a creditable band.
