It Pays to Advertise. Following the publication in the Pioneer some time ago of an inter- view.with W. B. Stewart in which he recited some of the conditions of the country adjacent to Grygla, the matter was reprinted in the Minnea- polis Journal. The Journal carried " the story to Aberdeen, S. D., and Mr. Stewart recently received a letter |’ from a man in Aberdeen inquiring further of the development of this part of Minnesota. All of which is but one more illustration that when you have a thing to sell, it pays to advertise. ) Not a Judge. Colonel Luce has dissolved the court martial in the First regiment and the fifteen St. Paul officers who were to have been tried are again in charge of their commands. Col- onel Luce found that a regimental court martial has the right to try enlisted men only. A court martial ot officers must be called on a regu- lar army officer or a state officer commanding a brigade. Colonel Luce is not in the position of the Kansas. judge who recently cited an editor to appear before him for con- tempt of court and then summarily sent him to jail. The colonel found he had no right to name the court which would listen to the charges he’ preferred. The Fortunes of War. The. fortunes of battles of man to man and man with the elements are often. similar. Capt. Roald Amund- son reached the south pole in De- cember, 1911, and word of his dis- covery reached the civilized world in the spring of 1912. After suffering many hardships, Captain Amundson and his party returned home safely and today he is being feted in this country as the discoverer of the south pole. Captain Amundson is a Nor- wegian. Captain Robert F. Scott, an Eng- lish officer, with a company of scien- tists, also set out in search. of the South Pole about the time that Cap- tain Amundson did. Word has now been received that he reached the pole a month after Amundsou, found the Norwegian flag and. hut that Amundson had built, took some ob- servations and started back. The party was caught in a blizzard and all perished. Both risked life and fortune for the same object. One won and the other lost. The Need of a. Band. From a communication printed: in the Pioneer yesterday, it appears that the Bemddji band concerts are not being well attended this winter. Mr. Remfrey said that the main in- terest in the band appeared to be in the summer but if no concerts were given in the winter, ‘subscriptions would fall off and the band would have to disorganize. The band is supported the year around by monthly subscriptions of $1 or $2 given by the business men and collected by an agent of the band. . The money. collected is used to pay the director's salary of $75 per ‘month, cost of music, uniforms, etc. The members of the band are glven no remuneration for their services. Once a week. in the summer: and once: a. month. in the winter, they give public concerts. To do this; they practice twice a week in summer and once in winter. It will be seen them:that the man who plays in the band puts:in three nights a week in the summer and five a month in the winter in a pub- He service for which there is no re- ward. other. than the. satisfaction of doing a public work and doing it well, the ' band- is usually found on hand when . any worthy public enterprise is on.foot and .its presence. i8 ‘asked. These efforts on: the part-of the| band-men: cannot be given too-much appreciation. A good .band concert 18 & drawing card which brings many;j; lake people into the city at least once a week. It is an advertisement that Bemidji is a modern city when the band turns out to meet a prom- inent man, on Decoration day, or on other occasions. A good band is a municipal asset which is now the goal of many smaller communities. The band men are not asking for money: all they want is appreciation for the public service they are doing. Surely Bemidji can give them this. PAID ADVERTXSEMENT (Inserted by Hiram A. Simons, Be- midji, Minn. Amount Paid, $10.00.) HIRAM A. SIMONS. Presents himself as a Non-Partisan candidate for Judge of the Municipal Court of this City to be voted for at the coming City Election to be held on the 18th day of February, 1913. On the 25th day of September, 1911, he was appointed by Governor Eberhart to succeed the late Hon. H. 'W. Bailey, as Judge of the Municipal Court in this City, and has held the office since that time, and he feels that his administration of the affairs of the office justifies him in asking the voters of this city to endorse that administration at the coming elec- tion.
