FOOTBALL IN HOLY . CITY Contending. Teams Strive for Victory in. the Shadaw: of the: Sacred Walls. Recently, for the first time' in the histery of the Holy City; its people thronged around a field;. almost with- in the shadows of its. sacred walls, where contending football teams strove together for victory. The vie torious team was composed entirely of American students. from the Syrian Protestant college at Befrut, and Un- cle Sam'’s boys: can: claim to have in- troduced the sport of football into the Holy Land. The contests were spread over’ four days. On the first after noon the Beirut men played a team made up of the young men of the missions of the London Jews’ socfety and of the Church Mission society of the city; on the seecond afternoon with a team selected from the ranks —Christian, Moslem and Jewish—of the Young Men’s Christian assocla- tion of the city; on the third after non with the team of St. George's college, and on the last afternoon with a team selected from all the Jerusalem players. - The third game was a tie, but. the three others were won by the Beirut men. The teams were made up of natives and Euro peans, the latter being of several re ligions, including Mohammedans. A local band of the -American colony played on the last day. Stone, head of the depart- ment of mathematics in the State Nor- mal school, Montclair, N. J., gets what he demands, he will be the most pop- ular man in the United States of Ameica with over 20,000,000 small boys and girls. He wants to “humanize arithmetic,” to cut out of common school education such banes of existence to small boys and girls as cube foot; all fractions with’ denominators like _elevenths, nineteenths, twenty-thirds and the like; all problems in taxes, customs, insurance, stocks and bonds, foreign exchange, technical arithmetic which deals with bricklaying, carpet laying, plastering, paper hanging and such work, “which is governed by trade rules; the measurements of the frus- trum of a cone, a pyramid or a sphere; and many other awful things which have kept little curly, heads weeping under the lamplight when they should have been sound asleep upon the pil- low. He wants a child to learn arithme- tic as it learns to spell and read; to solve the problem by merely - look- ing at it. He usserts that the arith- metic necessary for daily life is enough for any child. He believes that examinations should ‘test judg- ment and accuracy,.and not memory; and that a child should have the use uf the text books while he is be- ing examined.
