The public is always interested in the marriage of people of note but the interest taken in the marriage Gould and Finley J. Shepard is more than mere- today ‘of Miss Helen M. ly curious. It is the tribute of a na- tion to a woman who is good and whose memory as Helen Gould will live for many years. Signs of the Times. Within the pgst week several mat- ters have come to the attention of the editor which put together indicate that the farmers of this country are getting the co-operative spirit and that the future will see a decided change in their relations with their neighbors and between communities. In thé town of Grant Valley a farmers club has been organized with cighteen charter members. The ob- Ject of the club is to furnish a means for the exchange of information and meetings are held once a month at the homes of different members. In the summer joint meetings will be held with other clubs so that the in- formation gathered finally will be more than local. In the town of Summit four farm- ers have clubbed together and will buy a high grade bull. They are not looking for a thoroughbred but one that comes of a good strain and is a good individual. Bach farmer will koep' the bull three months of the year, will charge himself and the other three one dollar for each serv- ice and will charga the other neigh- bors two. At the end of the year, the earnings of the bull will be divided in four shares, each partner getting his as a return on his investment. In the town of Nebish, three farm- ers have decided to buy a good bull on the same plan used in Summit and |t are waiting until they find the right fourth. The Nebish men are believ- s in Jfall calving and plan to have their cows come fresh sometime after the lirst of September, They are look-. ing for a young bull that can berais- ed for service next year. They plan to make Nebish the center of a big cream shipping community and are after a young Guernsey. Several conmimunities are planning to organize farmers clubs of twelve ‘fnmllies each. This number appears to be the most convenient as then the club can meet with each family once 2 month and no family will entertain oftener than once a year. Where communities are thickly settled two or more clubs can be formed and in- ter club meetings held during the summer in nearby groves or in win- ter in convenient school houses. As an exchange for experience and in- formation,” a small farmers club can- not be excelled. Where one subject is taken for each meeting and every man in the club is given five min- utes to talk on it, a-good amount of information can be gleaned in an evening. The farmer’s wife in Northern Minnesota does not have an easy lot. Her only diversions from her house- work are going to town once in a while and visiting her neighbors. To her the club comes as an opportunity once a 'month to meet the other wo- men of her neighborhood -and talk over with them matters of interest to the women only. The club is as important to the wife as to the farm- er. 2 When_the country is well dotted; with clubs, it will be easy to extend the co-operation from one neighbor- hood to another and eventually band them all in a common club which can have headquarters in Bemidji. Each small club can be represented by one or two members-and the representa- tive club can be made a force of great good for both the farmers and the townspeople. .| er legal’ notices require: .
