The Bemidji Pioneer has been des- ignated by the county commissioners as the official paper of-Beltrami coun- ty. The contract for the legal print- ing was let at the first meeting of the board and calls for the regular legal rates. The bid put in by the Pioneer was a joint bid of every legal paper in the county. Under this bid, the Pioneer is the official paper and will set up and print such matter as the commis- sloners’ proceedings, tax list, finan- cfal statement, etc., but will furnish supplements containing the same matter to each of the legal newspa- pers, The papers to which the Pioneer will furnish supplements are the Kelliher Journal, Bemidji Sentinel, Blackduck American, Baudette Reg- ion and Spooner News. The plan as adopted by the county commissioners was hit upon as the only way in which all of the people of the county could be treated the same in the mat- ter of reading the official news. Last year the printing was given the Bau- dette Region and people in this end of the county had to subscribe to a paper in which they had little inter- est in order to get the official pro- ceedings. A few years ago, the peo- ple ‘in the north end of the county had to take a second paper. Under the contract as let by the commissioners, every person in Bel- trami county who takes any one of the legal papers—which is one that has been published for at least fifty- two consecutive weeks—will be able to read the official notices of the county. By letting such a contract, the commissioners have put them- selves squarely on record as in favor of the widest publicity possible for the proceedings of their board. Good Roads and Land Values. Good roads and high land values go hand in hand. The farmer who lives in the backwoods and has to travel over stumps and through mud holes in order to wend his weary way to market cannot get much for his land and after he has brought it to a state of cultivation. On the other hand, once the roads have been put into such a condition that hauling is not difficult, his land has by that fact increased in value. “Good roads and good land values are brother and sister,” said a Be- midji man today. “They go hand in hand. A fellow with a farm fifteen miles out of town but with a nice turnpike road to it need not worry. But if he can’t get his produce to the market, the best land in the world is worth nothing to him.” There is the case in a paragraph. Northern Minnesota is vitally inter- ested in the matter of good roads be- cause we know that we have as good land as there is in the country. It needs only development to put this section of the state in the front rank for bread, butter and meat producing. The Elwell law and the Dunn amend- men are ‘ helping put good roads through the north country. Now if the legislature will appropriate to each county an amount equal to a road tax on the state land which is being held for sale in that county, the good work will go much faster, A Proper Step. Melvin Stainbrook has placed on his farm four thoroughbred Oxford ewes as the foundation stock for his flock of sheep. These ewes are regis- tered, all are prize winners and have been bred to a thoroughbred . ram. Their offspring will be as good as themselves and the four with the lambs which will -come next spring will make ‘a first c|:u,ss foundation flock. 4 : - Mr. Stainbrook’s initial inyestment is about $100 as the ewes. cost about $2B eachi' 1laid “'down ' in Bemidji. ’l‘hey‘a'r'e ‘good sheep and will Téturn him their value many times over. The Good Salesman’s Creed. 1 believe in the goods I am selling, in the firm I am working for, and in my ability to get “results.” I believe that honest goods can be sold to hon- est men by honest methods. I believe in working nov waiting, in laughing not weeping, in boosting not knock- ing and in the pleasure of selling goods. 1 believe that a man gets what he goes after, that one order to- day is worth two tomorrow and that no man is down-and-out until he has lost faith in himself. 1 believe in today and the work I am doing, in tomorrow and the work 1 hope to do and in the sure reward which the future holds. I believe in courtesy, in kindness, in generosity, in good cheer, in friendship and hon- est competition. 1 believe there is an order somewhere for every man ready to take one. 1 believe I'm ready— right now. Not Enjoyable. “Do you shave yourself?” asked the victim in the chair. “Sure thing,” replied the garrulous parber. ' “And do you enjoy it?” “Never! You see, I do it when I'm lone, and 80 there’s no one for me to talk to.” FIRFIIRRARIIIRR KRR K WE RETURN Today pictures made from the films you send in this morning.
