DENU. EAROLD J. DANE, Rditor. Good Roads and Schools, The report of the county superin- “tendent ‘of schools would = indlcate that school attendance is best where the roads are good and transporta- tion easy. .. This is true both for| schools where the students are tak- en in covered rigs or where they have to go on foot. It is impossible to secure good school attendance when the scholars have to tramp ‘through ‘mud; ‘stumble over stumps or avold jagged ruts. ‘Good roads development and bet- : ter:education ‘go hand in ‘hand. Peo- ple in: this part of ‘the:staté inter- ested in:seeing the coming genera- tions receive better educations snow that this cannot be accomplished ‘without good roads and are joining hands with the good roads enmthus- iasts. All of the help the state can glve to roads in this country will also be directly appreciated in the better and more regular school attendance. - Will Elect a Socialist. From present indications Bemidji will soon have another election fight which may be a repetition of the one waged last year and’ which resulted in the election of one Social alder- man and a Socialist mayor. Although the city election is supposed to be non-partizan, it is rapidly develop- ing into a contest between the Soc- ialists and anti-Socialists. This condition is similar to the one in Minneapolis during the last elec- ton. Two men were nominated on the non-partizan ticket. The Social- ists immediately put a.man. in the fleld by .petition and tried to put the race on the three corner basis, which the law aimed to eliminate and which results in a minority choice. Mr. would resigned and Mr. Nye received & majority of the votes. It Bcmidji. people wish to have the lssue drawn clearly between Social- st and non-Socialist principles, the line, a few days ago: “Booming .Y 3. Hill for Wilson Cabinet; Bankers Start the Ball Rolling.” ‘Whereupon a fellow who seems to have a fairely well developed:sense of bhumor wrote to another morning pa- per as follows: “xne portfolio for which Mr. Hill is being boomed is that of secretary of agriculture. B “For fear that his friends, through disinterestedness, may stop with this one suggestion, a complete cabinet in harmony with the foregoing is here- with suggested: “Secretary of State—J. P. Morgan & Co. “Secretary of the Treasury—Kuhn, Loeb & Co. “Secretary of War—The United States steel corporation. “Secretary of the Navy—Cramp & Co. “Secretary of the Interior—Gug- genheim Exploitation Co. “Secretary of Agriculture—The In- ternational Harvester Co. “Secretary of Commerce and Labor —The New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad Co. “Attorney General—Elihu Root. “Postmaster General—The Adams Express Co.” —Wisconsin State Journal. MINNESOTA TRAVELING MAN IN BAD SHAPE. In an affidavit executed .before a Notary in St. Paul a traveling man swears to th e following: -Had ‘a scrofulous ulcer about two by three inches in size on the right side of neck over the jugular vein—a dan- gerous place. Was treated by many doctors but no: benefit, - Allen’s Ul- cerine Salve cured the ulcer in six months. This salve is one-of the oldest rem- edies in America and since 1869 it has been known as the only salve powerful enough to cure chronic ul- cers and old sores of long standing. Allen’s Ulcerine Salve acts by drawing out the poisons and healing the sore from the bottom up. It is so powerful that it heals new cuts and sores in one-third the time that common salves and liniments take. And it heals burns and scalds with- out a scar. Sold at Barker's Drug store.—Adv. [ MERCH best thing that can be done is for the various candidates to hold a caucus and select -one of:their number to run against the Socialist. It is time for some of the old factions to bury the hatchet and remember that Be- midji is not the town it was ten years ago. The fights of those days have been largely forgotten and to open up the breaches year after year merely keepa soft old sores. At the-present time, two men will oppose. ‘the Socialist for mayor and four will oppose hl{n for judge of the police court. There may be develop- ed contests in.some of the wards, Several of.the candidates have. said ‘that they-are willing to get togeth- er ‘and select ‘one ‘man to make the race. To do 8o would be to serve the -community in a real way. As it is ‘mow, the. Socialists are. practically shre of ‘two:offices. ] One More Commission City. Devil’a Lake, N. D., has just adopted the commission form of gov- ernment by a large vote. One by one the cities of‘the country are falling into line. The commission form is the _only one that admits of a thorough business - -administration. Bemidji needs such ‘an administration. Taxes are altogether too-high ‘here. . * Out. in’ California. It:is.expected that the present ses- ‘sion of thie Calitornia-legislature will withess & remewal: of'the -attempts frequently made to enact an “alien land law” bill, designed to preveut “aliens incapable of becoming citi- zen of the United States.from acquir- ing ‘property” within the boundaries of ‘the state. ‘A measure reopening this question probably will be intro- duced within a.few days. ‘Powerful.opposition: has developed, :however; bevause ofsthe fear that if an glien land law was “enacted, or threatened, Japan and other nations - would withdraw. their.support .of the ~'Panama-Pacific. - expestion in.-San ) — !
