Here is what Western New York found about par- cels” post—it’s about an even break between the mail order house and 'the 3 local merchant on prices. d The local dealer has the advantage 3 of direct touch and personal service. The mail order house has the ad- vantage of bigger stock and more systematic advertising. He picked fifty of his customers in New York and Pennsylvania, repre- senting average trade conditions, and asked them for quotations on nine- teen standard articles that can be handled to advantage by mail deliv- ery. He found that there was not so much range of retail prices as was generally supposed. There was lit- tle variation in prices, Then he compared the average price of the Dineteen articles with the price at, which they were offered by the mail order houses. Then he assumed that they were to be sent by mail within the 600 mile zone, that is more than 300 miles and not over 600. Here is the result: Retail price of nineteen articles, $26.77. Mail order price $22.50; $5.64—total $28.10. The retail merchant has a margin of $1.33 to cover cost of local post- age.. S. Edward Rose of Elmirs, who compiled' these figures, does not say how near that comes to covering the Ppostage the retail merchant must pay on the local delivery but he indicates that it won't quite do it. He figures, however, that the situation is by no wmeans discouraging for the retail dualer—especially if the jobber will stand by him. Postage New Idea From Dunn, Bob Dunn, whose “think factory” works overtime conceiving new schemes by which money for good roads may be obtained, has evolved another thriller. It is that the state should lend its credit to the counties in order that they can obtain money for good roads at a low rate of in- | terest. The scheme would work out like this, he says: The people of any county might decide to build a sys- tem of highways -and bond them- selves for the improvement: The bonds will then be issued and for- warded to the state treasurer to_ be held until paid, . On the basis of these bonds, the statewould. .then decide to issue state - bon ‘The state bonds Would mrerely "be “&”Bub- stitute for the county’ bon : state auditor would assess the coyn- ty sufficiently to pay the'Interest and Pprovide's siuking fund for the bonds. will report wh)ell they do|ponds and = gets subscriber to the Dally Ploneer|through the regular tax collections. There is a movement among health puthorities to do’something to arouse the public to the danger from the tele- phone,: the disk, being a collector of germs to some-“extent. Telephones should:be washed-with soap and water and. kept as clean as possible, a good disinfectant also being necessary. The telephone companies should keep pub- lic instruments and the booths in a clean condition. It is suggested that the telephone be not held to the mouth, but against the breast when talking and ancthk.r precaution is toplace paper or linen over the transmitter. HOW’S THIS?
