Doctor Eliot of Harvard declares that postponed marriage is a great modern evil in educated soclety. His beliet 18 given in full in Harper's Bazar, a cheerful message to the coming generation, in the course of which he says: “You will hear some young man say: I cannot invite a girl, who has been brought up to do nothing for herself, and to have every luxury provided for her, to marry me, | until T can earn an income which will enable her to live with me in that way. I have two remarks to make ebout that doctrine—that if a girl has been brought up in that manner, the sooner she has a chance to live dif- ferently the better for her; and, sec- ondly, that it is only fair for a young man who loves a young woman to con- sult whether or not she wishes to marry him before he can earn a large Income. “The young woman has a clear right to say a word, on that subject to the man she loves and not to be obliged to wait till he is thirty-five years old before he asks her to marry him. This is a matter of looking | rhead at a critical point in your lives. You are not in the habit, perhaps, of contemplating this event of marriage. It would be wiser to do so. The pooner you begin to think about it the | better—first, because it will be think- Ing about the most important event of | your lives in respect to the develop- ment of your own characters and to | the happiness not only to yourselves, {but of the women you will marry, gnd of the family life which will nor- mally result.” Great Writer’s Foible. Byron, whose vanity was as great | r his genius, used to have his hair on e up in curl papers at night. Service. The height of virtue is to serve mankind.—Grainger. ‘When you have a bilious attack give Chamberlain’s Tablets a trial. They are excellent. For sale by Bar- ker’s drug store.—Adv. OUR GEO. T. BAKER & CO.| = 116 Third St. Manhattan’s Hotels. Only a few weeks ago the hotel men pf New York—a tribe who keep pret- ty close together through their asso- ciation—took a sort of cemsus of the business. They found ii Manhattan elone 225 hotels of fifty rooms or more, with a grand total of 53,000 rooms. Which means, according to the usual rush business way of count- ing, that in a pinch the hotels of Manhattan—the real hotels, not in- cluding little fellows, apartment houses and such—could take in' and give beds to 100,00 visitors. Pretty careful studies show that the hotels of the three greatest cities of Europe could not together find accommoda- tion for so many people. We wish to call your attention to i the fact that most infectious diseases such as whooping cough, diphtheria and scarlet fever are contracted when the child has a cold. Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy will quickly cure a cold and greatly lessen the danger of contracting these diseases. This rem- edy is famous for its cures of colds. It contains no opium or other narcot- ic and may be given to a child with drug store.—Adv. Up On the Roof. Peop’e in Los Angeles didn't love the cat that got in the organ’'s works. Especially the organist didn’t. But pway at the other side of the contin- ent half a town was troubled about the welfare of a cat. It was in Pawtucket, R. I. A cat had been chased by a deg or a boy pr maybe its own fears and had crawled out of an attic window to the roof of the house. Then, as often hap- It howled and was miserable, and the i police were called and could do noth- Ing. They had to call in the fire de- partment after two days, and the fire- men put up their ladders to the roof and rescued the cat, who was not in | the least grateful. | His Part In the Affair. “Your son-in-law has a title.” “Yes,” replied the patient father; “but I am the one who is furnishing the expen- sive binding material and the gilt dec- yration.”—Buffalo Commercial. Aside from fighting the Turk, about pll that commends a commission in the Greek army is the length of the titles borne by the officers. The pay is far less imposing, an average American workingman making more in a year than a Graeek captain. In Greece the minister of war re- ceives an annual salary of $1,800, just | $100 more than is paid a second lieu- tenant in the United States army. A brigadier genmeral is called a hypos- trategos and draws $1,416. The same grade in this country carries a salary of $6,000. A colonel is called a syntagmatarchis pnd is paid 41,392, against the $4,000 en American colonel gets. A lien- tenant-colonel labors under the name of an antisyntagmatarchis, for which be is paid a scant $1,172. An officer | of the same rank in the United States ermy receives $3,500. A major, known as a tagmatarchis, is paid $1,- 056, whereas here he would get $3,000. Grades in the line are much Jless remunerative. A lochagos, or captain, Is paid $720 a year, while an Ameri- can of similar rank receives $2,400. A first lieutenant, whose title is hvpolochagos, draws $432, and here he would be paid $2,000. An American | pecond lieutenant’'s pay is $1,700. while the equivalent rank in the | Greek army is known as anthypolocha- pos, the renumeration of which is $382. Also in the Greek army is the ; irank of adjutant, or anthypaspistis, | the pay of which is $264. HOW’S THIS?
