Their first attempt was at the time the University farm train was here in November and they were then as- sisted to a large extent by Miss Eddy. The football banquet was planned and prepared by the girls with Miss Eddy as supervisor. The mail goes from here to Mineapolis and Assistant Postmaster Fosness says that mail sent after December 10 cannot be delivered abroad before Christmas. There have been a larger number of packages and parcels, but whether they are Christmas gifts or not we have no means of knowing. “All'mail to the Philippine islands should have been mailed a couple of weeks ago. It is too late now to send mail across the Pacific in time for Christmas. But there is still time to get mail delivered in England and in almost all European countries now. The mail will be very heavy this year and the public should help as much as possible by mailing’ presents early.” Prisoners Earning Money. Some time ago the legislature passed an act through which prison- ers at Stillwater are able to earn money while serving their sentences. The work has been put on the piece system, as far as possible, and the earnings of the prisoners during the past year were $40,000 according to the annual report of Warden Wolfer which has just been made public. ‘Mr, Wolfer says the law passed four years ago has worked well. “It has not only encouraged the prisoner to make the most of his mental and physical energies,” says the warden, “but it has also proved a great source of comfort and support to his family, if he has one. The law seems suffi- ciently elastic to meet all require- ments, We are making every effort to establish an impartial piece sys- tem of earnings that will meet ap- proval of all industrious and well- disposed prisoners.” The report shows that on July 31 there were 814 inmates of the pris- on, of whom 498 were single, 81 mar- ried without children, 126 married and having children and 44 divorced. The report deplores the escape of Jerry McCarty and Peter Juhl, but claims for Stillwater one of the best récords in the country for safekeep- ing of prisoners. Mr. Wolfer recom- mends a more stringent law covering unlawful communication with con- victs, and the bringing into prison of contraband articles, especially nar- cotics. “Narcotics in their various forms are the cause. of nearly. every serious prisen insurrection,” says the report.
