This being the case it is safe to pre- - dict that it*is a success. —_— Listen to the appeal of the merch- ants throughout the entire country. “Do your Christmas shopping early.” The newspapers have also taken up the cry. It's a cry that should be heeded by every loyal citizen. In each case where it is possible to shop early it should by all means be done. There are enough people who must wait until the last few days on ac- count of financial conditions, and even these should make . selections early and meet their obligations when they can. Do it mow. Taft is the son of a judge and for a large part of his life was himself a judge. His parents were able to educate him, but they were not rich. Mr. Taft in his early life worked as a newspaper reporter. Honest men in the service of the public seldom accumulate fortunes. When Mr. Taft was elected President he was a poor man. It is said that he was not worth more than five thousand dollars. He will rétire from the office as a poor man though his reputation as a lawyer and the prestige attached to his public car- eer will probably enable him to make lucrative connections as a lawyer. But Mr. Taft will have to go to work —just as any “common man” must find another job when he has lost one. Gov. Wilson is the son of a Pres- byterian minister. His parents doubtless by strict economy and self- denial, were able to give him excel- Any The Universal is an easier, quicker and cleaner way of making bread. The nail drove part of his black woolen sock far up into his foot. He remov- ed as much of the sock as he could, put on Allen’s Ulcerine Salve, and kept right on with his work. The salve drew out parts of the sock and all other poisons and in a week his foot was healed up. This salve is one of the oldest rem- edies in America and since 1869 it has been known as the only salve powerful enough to cure chronic ulcers and old sores of long standing. Allen’s Ulcerine Salve acts by drawing out the poisons and healing the sore from the bottom up. It is so powerful that it heals new cuts and sores in one-third the time that common salves and liniments take. And it heals scalds and burns with- out a scar. After graduating from Princeton and from the law department of the Uni- versity of Virginia, Mr. Wilson, in a little while entered upon a career of teaching. There is no money in teaching—at best, a fair livelihood may be expected from it. A profes- sor or president of Princeton Univer- sity must be.content to live comfort- ably and pay the premiums on his life insurance policies unless he is willing to live in niggardly manner. Without any actual information as to his financial condition, we believe it safe to say that Governor Wilson will go into the White House wholly dependent on his salary. Presidents do not save from their salaries and Mr. Wilson will return to private life, some day a poor man. From the careers of these two men encouraging lessons drawn, may be One is that even in these times, when millionaires, in parts of the country, are as common as pig- tracks and not especially uncommon anywhere, a poor man may be elected to the highest office in the country. The other is that a young man with a first rate education need set no limit to his hororable ambition; The “self-made man”, without a col- lege education, may become Presi- dent of the United States, but the examples of Taft and Wilson go far to prove that university training counts in any contest or struggle. In contrast With these, Colonel Roosevelt is perhaps the one man in the history of our country who has attained to the presidercy and who was born wealthy—so wealthy that never in his life was he compelled to work for himself or his family. The moral in his case seems to be that even a rich man may get a “square deal” in this land of opportunity.
