Ralph De Palma is the individual road racing champion of America for the season of 1912, and the car honors go to the Fiat, according to the find- ing of the jury of critics, which passes. upon such things, the American Au- tomobile association declining to un- dertake the task of picking title hold- ers. De Palma succeeds to the unofficial title, which in the past has been held by Harvey Herrick, Ralph Mulford &and Bert Dingley, through having won four out of the five road races, in ‘which he started last summer. Teddy Tetzlaff might be styled runner-up, be- cause of his having won three firsts, while Harry Endicett i8 next with two. . The 1912 road racing season wound up with the running of the Phoenix desert events, and following the drop ping of the curtain the results of the year have been summarized by C. G. Sinsebaugh, chairman of the contest board of the Chicago Automobile club, who makes his report.in the Motor Age. Critics will be surprised to find that 1912 wasn't 8o much of an “off” year as anticipated. There were twenty road races run as against twenty-sev- en in 1911. There were 156 entries in the twenty events, as against 202 the season previous, and the average number of starters was slightly in ex- cess of 1911. The distances averaged greater, too, 232 as against 206. A better percentage of finishers, also, is reported, while the same number of makes of cars competed this year as last—forty-four. Passengers on the car leaving this | city- one afternoon were treated to a pretty sight at the rock cut below Egypt Brook on the Derby line when three large deer raced ahead of the fast running car for over 300 yards, leav- Ing the tracks when the car got so close that the fender touched the | hind legs of the last deer. Motorman J. L. McGuire came upon the deer suddenly as the car rounded a sharp turn in the rock cut and pounded his gong. The deer stood Btill for a moment and McGuire put on his brakes, as he was afraid that he would strike them. He blew the tir whistle and the three were off in a |iffy, running ahead of the car at full tpeed. McGuire then followed while the passengers aboard the car srowded into the front end to watch the deer. They ran gracefully to- jether, but could not get off the tracks I8 there is a very steep declivity on he right hand side and the bank ran Ip too steep on the left to permit them o get off the right of way. Finally they came to a spot where hey could leave and one after the jther they jumped into the under- irush on the uphill side. The last leer lingered so long by the side ot he track that the fender brushed its 1eels as it leaped aside. Two of the deer were falr sized rhile the third was one of the largest leen by the trolleymen in their experi- :nce along that line. Deer are rather tommon in the Beacon Falls section of the run and they are frequently peen by early morning trolley crews. Harry Hogan, conductor of the car, raid that although he has seen many deer on the trolley tracks in that pection, these seemed less afraid of the car than any.—Waterbury Re- publican.
