The tariff question is usually dis- cussed by the man who admits he don’t know how. Sitting on the fence is risky busi- ness. One might fall the way. Ask Nick Longworth. wrong A scientist declares that 'in five hundred years we shall not have any hair on our heads, but what do we care.—Ex. Don’t marry out of your set is wholesome advice, but suppose a fel- low’s set wobbles around so that he ean’t marry in it. /3 The man ‘who tries to borrow money certainly will agree with Woodrow Wilsonh, when he said, “the trust question is the greatest one.” The price of beefsteak is sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust, but it’s considered cheap when com- pared, with radium at $1,000 an ounce. l It is noticeable that when a politi- cian begins to talk about reducing the cost of living he looks ri,ght at the American farmer. Yet the farmer is only getting 46 cents for every dol- lar paid by the ultimate consumer for farm products. Let the farmer alone and turn the spot light on the railroads and the commission dealers. —Journal Press. Fate of Farming May Depend on the Girls, (Editorial from the San Francisco Bulletin.) After making a thorough investi- gation and testing their relative merits, Uncle Sam has come to the conclusion that his girls are better farmers than his boys. A few years ago the Department of Agriculture organized boys’ clubs and girls’ clubs in various agricul- tural communities and inspired them to friendly rivalry in the raising of crops. Now reports of achievements are being made and the wiseacres who predicted an easy victory for the boys have not yet recovered suffici- ently from their disappointment to offer explanations. In Oklahoma, a State of great op- portunities for producers of food, the girls raised and canned ninety vari- eties of fruit. The boys were no- where in the race. To quote the dispatch from Washington, “the girls beat the boys hollow.” In other States the contest was closer, but the general summing up found the noble male no longer lord of the soil. Here is a fine chance for American women to help lower the cost of liv- ing. She can not only devote her talents to making the land more pro- ductive, but she can do much to in- duce the surplus of men of the cities to go to farming or fruit-raising. The effect of such a change would be to increase the number of self-sup- porting Americans and to lessen the burden of countless toilers. To become a farmer the American woman does not have to sow and plow and harrow like many of her European sisters. ‘She can do her share of the work by planning it out and then gently bossing the hus- band, brother or hired man intrusted with the hard labor. In time she may even rise to the distinction of hossing a small army of men, to their advantage as well as her own. Parental Duty. “I'm afraid my son will detect my duplicity,” sald Mr. Ohlsport. “I'm so frequently compelled to chide him for his lack of proficiency in his studies when. I am- secretly yearning to congratulate him on bis fne football work.” APPENDICITIS BOOK FREE ‘The Adler-i-ka book, telling how you can EASILY guard against ap- pendicitis, and how you can relieve constipation or gas on the stomach INSTANTLY, is offered free this| week by E.
