Socialist Vote Increasing. Early returns in this county would indicate that the Socialist vote is in- creasing materially with each elec- tion. Where a few years ago it was the "Republicans and Democrats who fought out the county and state tickets, it is now "Republicans and Socialists. ‘The Socialists are giv- ing the: Republicans a close run for several county offices this year. The Soo Line Special. Bemidji will be host to leading farm extension workers of the state on Saturday afternoon. They are coming with a special train of eleven cars over the Soo line and will be here from 3 p. m. Saturday to 9 a. m. Monday. This visit is important to the business men of this city as well as to the. farmers as the word has gone forth that there are no farmers near Bemidji. By personal solicitation and any other available menas the business men must get their farmer customers in to see that train Saturday. It is a complete farm on wheels and a college educa- tion.-in- itself. ** ‘Bemidji’s Fire Engine. 1t has been suggested sometime in the past that Bemidji dispose of her fire. engine.. Just what the depart- ment would have done without it at the Rex 'hotel fire is hard to realize as_the engine furnished the only source of supply for the entire .city for'a period of more than two hours. ‘When the water supply from the pumping station gave out the engine crew was called upon to extend it- selt and did fine work. The crew is composed of the following members: Fred Bursley, Rube Miller and John Cline, It is believed that this dem- onstration will result in dispensing with the idea that. Bemidji should sell. its, engine. 4 The Rex Hotel Fire. ‘The Rex hotel fire has brought home to every one in Bemidji two important. facts: ) 1. That the man who does not take out insurance it the gambler and the man who insures plays safe. 2. That Bemidji has adequate fire fighting apparatus and service but-an inadequate water supply. The first point needs little elabora- tion. The man who does not insure bets that he will never have a fire, | The man who does insure takes no chances and if he is fortunate enough to be skipped he knows that his money is helping some one else. . Bemidji has pumps and mains large enough and strong enough to hold. five. times as much water as was available yesterday and at three times the pressure. The attention of ‘the council has been brought re- peatedly to the fact that the city is depending upon one well for its water supply and that that well is g00d"for but 200 gallons per minute. Instead of taking prompt action, the council has been delaying the mat- ter several months. It -is- impractical to pump water out ‘of the lakes except in cases of emergency, as the water has been condemned by the state health offi- cers: .The one thing left for the city to do is to put down more wells and $1,000 or $1,600 in wells yesterday ‘would probably have saved the hotel. As it wis, not enough water could be-thirown into the building and at times the pressure would mot carry the stream to the third floor. ] Bemidji has had two bad fires al- ran‘d‘y this year and they are not goed -for -the insurance rate.
