DENU, EAROLD J. DAWE, maitor. % Lobeck A Good Campaigner. E. E. Lobeck, prohibitionist candi- date for governor, had an unique experience recently while campaign- ing on the range. After he had fin- ished his address at Virginia and sat down, the applause finally broke in- to cheers and crics for ancther ad- dress. He spoke again for three- quarters of an hcur and-then return- ed to his hotel arriving there about 11 p. m. ‘When about ieady for bed a call came from the Finnish Temperance Hall, one of the largest in the city, for him to address a meeting which was being held there. Mr. Lobeck dressed and went to the hall where he found 400, people waiting for him. He addressed them for an hour, In view of the fact that few can- didates are Succeeding in arousing any enthusiasm, Mr. Lobeck’s success must ‘be due to the fact that he is a good campaigner. The Wages Of Graft. The Minneapolis Tribue says: “For ways that are dark the ad- ministration ot justice in New York city is peculiar. Whether its tricks are destined to be vain remains to be seen. Take, for instance, the police scan- dal and the case of Lieutenant Beck- er. The witness on whom District Attorney Whitman most relied fcr the conviction of Becker, “Big Jack” Zelig, was permitted to roam the city plying his regular vocation of black- jacking and “sticking up” Whoever might be supposed to have 2 little money in_ his clothes. One evenitig “Big Jack’ made the mistake of holding up a tough citizen Who proved to be somewhat revenge- ful, and so- got himself shot and kill- ed, much to the embarrassment of the case of the commcnwealth against Becker. On the body of the murdered man were found letters from the four “gun men” who are supposed to have done the actual killing of the gam- bler, Rosenthal, telling what a fine time they were having and how fat they were getting in the Tombs pris- on. It is understood that these men, and a couple of others who hired the assassing, have been promised im- munity for turning, state’s evidence and helping to convict Becker. ‘Why “Big Jack” was allowed to run at large and ply his vocation Wwhile theothers were held in jail as material witnesses, is not apparent. Perhaps his industry was necessary to keep his “pals” in funds. The whole affair has a queer look to the rest of the country. ity to six of the principals in a mur- der, for the purpose of securing the conviction of one, seems & price to pay. Notwithstanding the notoriety given them by this case, the so-called gangsterse of the Me- tropolis are as active as ever, and Dly the trades of pocket-picking and Immun- open robbery and murder with the usual impunity. It is a shocking exhibition of the depravity of a big city where the police force has been allowed to be- come honeycombed with graft. Its Imitation. “How fashion does svents of the day.” “What's truck you in fashions just &t present?” “The way we are having aviation tood price follow the Beware of Otintments for Oatarrh That . The quickest, best and safest way to cure catarrh or a cold in the head is by using a remedy that will “touch the spot” and do-its work quickly without leaving any bad effects. Ely’s Cream Balm, which is-applied to the nostrils or rubbed on the throat or chest gets right at the root of the trouble and instantly relieves even the worst case of catarrh or cold.
