Theodore Roosevelt is endeared to thousands of Americans for two qualities in particular. They are his | courage and his manliness. In the trying and exciting moments of his peril in Milwaukee Monday night, both shone out with renewed luster. Those who admired the Colonel be- fore the shooting find their admira- tion increased and many -who did not find that he is possessed of qualities which they heretofore did not suspect. Colonel Roosevelt is a tried soldier and it was his military training that made him face his audience and per- form a duty even though he was carrying a fresh wound and constant- ly losing blood. His delay in reach- ing a hospital, due to his insistence on making his address, may cost him his life although it is hoped it will not. A coward would have quailed; a weakling would have slunk away. The Colonel displayed at their best those qualties for which he is so admired. As Ritchie Sees It. J. H. Ritchie, sporting editor of the Minneapolis Journal says: “The world series and the football season have furnished a splendid study of the variance in methods be- tween the leaders of the football and the baseball teams. “In football we have the spectacle of Scout Frank of Nebraska and Scout McGovern returning to their various stamping grounds after hav- ing watched the rival teams play. ' “Frank goes back to Nebraska and tells his co-workers that the Minnesota team is a big bluff so far as weakness goes; that Dr. Williams is meat-feeding a lot of long-haired hyenas who are keeping ifolks in Minneapolis awake at nights as they howl for cornhusker gore. He paints the Gophers as maneating gizwillers with horns on their heads, spiked tails and cloven: hoofs—fire- eaters and general varmints in hu- man form, “McGovern comes back and tells the Gophers that he peeked through the bars of the cage and saw the Cornhuskers tearing trees in twain with their teeth; that they have claws like a Chinese mandarin and they are a beetle-browed gang of pirates who will stop at nothing short of chewing out the hearts of their antagonists to reach the goal line. They are all seven feet tall and weigh 300 pounds each and there isn’t a man .on the Nebraska squad who can’t fox-trot 100 yards in seven seconds flat and start with his back turned to the tape. At which information the Gophers are suppos- ed to be scared as stiff as an Egyptian mummy embalmed 7492 B. C. in fish glue. The same thing going at Ne- braska as a result of Frank’s inform- ation. % S But how happily different in base- balll Jake Stahl rose early every morning with the larks and summon- ing the sunrise edition reporters around him to tell them that he was confident that before he day’s close " the world would behold that bunch of crockery-legged, _bone-heads led by Jawn McGraw, shown up for what they were—the poorest ball team every tackling a world’s series; that his own incomparable Red Sox would and could make ’em look like a whiff of cigaret smoke in competition with a Banks of Newfoundland fog. MecGraw, not to be beaten, sits up until midnight to tell the re- porters of he last edition of the Mi(lyg_ht Squall that on the morrow he and his “greatest of modern ball teams would proceed to litter the landscape of the Polg grounds with that bunch of club-footed, ham- strung wory-domed misfits arfd muts from Boston; that the Giants were probably the greatest: baseball ‘team Bdl(?l’owaer AbsolutelyPure The Woman Makes the Home She makes it best who, looking after the culinary department, turns her back resolutely” upon unhealthful, or even suspicious, food accessories. ical; she knows that true economy ' does not consist in the use of | She is econom- inferior meat, flour, or baking powder. There may be some form of Dsy- chology in it all right, but why does the dope have to run up hill for baseball and down for football? The fellow who can get the answer can tackle the fourth dimension with every reason to ex- pect suceess to crown his first shot at the sublimated mathematics.— Minneapolis Journal. Difference.
