Published-every afternoon except Sun- day by the Bemidji Pioneer- Publishing Compapy, B. &. DENU_ HAROLD J..DANE, Editor. The Potato Market. Last week W. R. Mackenzie made the statement to the Pioneer that he believed potatoes would go to seven- ty-five cents a bushel before January 1. Mr. Mackenzie based his opinion on the fact that potatoes in Aroo- stock county, Maine, are now selling for over one dolalr a bushel and that Aroostock county is considered the key of the world’s potato market. Bemidji merchants have taken ex- ception to Mr. Mackenzie’'s state- ments and claim that potatoes will not go high this winter. They say that the production last year - was close to 100,000,000 bushels short of what it is this year and that a difference of even 5,000,000 bushels would cause the price to be lower. They advise farmers to sell while the market is strong as late reports from Chicago indicate a'weak market there and ‘alsg in‘Kansas City. Whether or not he shouldsell now, |- himselt; but it is not fair for a farmer who is owing for merchandise to hold his crops in hope that'the market will go higher when it‘may go lower. He runs the risk of losing the results of a year’s work -and forcing his mer- each ' farmer must decide chants to carry the acount for anoth- er year. The farmer who is out of debt can afford to speculate. The farmer who is not has no more right to speculate than the city business man who is in debt to his wholesale house. New Field for Merchants. If Congressman' Steenerson is suc- cessful in his promised endeavors to have congress order built a harbor on Red Lake at Redby, Bemidji mer- chants will. have an entirely new field opened to them. The business from this field is at present going to Thief River Falls, although the people would rather trade in their own county and keep their money at home. The people on the reserva- tion want the harbor, the people who live in the surounding country want the harbor, and if Bemidji will back Congressman Steenerson, work on the harbor should be started some time next sumemr, Should Be Looking Forward. Paving operations were started so late this year that the contractors are having trouble finding men and it is possible that the Nymore road may not be completed -before freeze- up. ‘Men have been attracted to the ‘harvest fields by the offer of high wages and few are left for city work. The city should start this fall pre- paring for the paving that is to 'be done next year. All of the prelimin- ary work, such as any special elec- tions if necessary, floating of bond issues, etc., should be done before the snow is off the ground in the spring so that when the contracts are let, the city will have the bene- fit of a low labor cost. Contractors will figure high enough to cover the cost of top price labor when they see that their jobs are to run into the fall. If they can start work in the spring, they can get men for less money and the cost per yard to the city for paving will be materially cut. It is practically certain that more paving will be laid next year and it should be laid in the spring.
