Of the nine members of the coun- cil, but one was in the Commercial club rooms Saturday night to hear the governor’s address, an address which, by the way, should have been heard by every business and profes- sional man in this city. He spoke from the shoulder, as one business man to others, and his message was important. The councilmen, espec- ially, should have been there. The absence of the eight caused no little " comment. Men of Vision, The speeches made by different men in conneetion with the visit of the governor here Saturday sounded one key note. What Northern Min- nesota needs is men of vision; men who can look to the future with an eye which sees clearly what is to come and what must be planned to meet the new conditions. ‘We have a few such men with us now. The governor, although not a resident of this section of the state, appears to be in close touch with lo- cal conditions and his words to the business men at the Commercial club Saturday evening showed that he was alive to the present needs of this country and also sees what the fu- ture holds in the way of develop- ment. A. J. McGuire, superintendent of the experimental farm at Grand Rap- ids, is a man of vision. He took the farm eight years ago when one of the fields under favorable conditions rais- ‘ed five tons of green fodder This year that same field undes less favorable conditions raised fifteen tons—an increase of three hundred per cent in eight years. Mr. McGuire knows that this country needs cream- eries, cows, corn, good roads and bet- ter schools. He knows that to get the best results from boys and girls they must be taught to work with their hands as well as their heads. McGuire is a man of vision. ‘W. P. Dyer is a man of vision. He three years ago had no sewing, corn. came to Bemidji when our schools cooking, manual training or agricul- tural classes. With an increase of but $1,600 to the city he has added these departments. The city has se- cured a large amount of state aid. Qur schools now teach boys and girls how to do things. Not a student can pass the eighth grade without taking a course in agriculture. Not a boy goes through high school without manual training nor a girl without work in cooking and sewing. Allied with him, Professor Dyer has teachers who are men and women of vision. They see what this coun- try needs and they are working hard to fulfill those needs. This winter they will take their knowledge into the outlying districts in extension work so the man and woman on the farm may know how to get the most out of their daily life. They are men and women who are seeing big things and.are thinking and work- ing in cycles of years. - The directors of our Comnlercial club are men of vision. They rea- lize that-a tree cut into cord wood has™ a small value; if sawed and worked into lumber, it has an in- creased value due to the labor put on it; if made into sashes and doors or will not always be with us and are using every effort to get other in-|- TER AT THE POSTOFFICE AT BE-|dustries to locate in'Bemidji. They are men of vision for they In fact, the men at the helm of Northern Minnesota are all men of vision, with a few exceptions. That is why Northern Minnesota is the young man’s country today. Here a man can count for something and can live to see the results of his work. Men of vision, big men such as President Vincent, Governor Eber- hart, Senator -Nelson, the men nam- ed above and scores of others, look here for the greatest growth of any section of the state. We need men of vision. We've got some. More are coming. There is room and work for all. TOO BUSY. Miss Howe—I suppose you visited all the points of interest while you were abroad. * Miss Wise—No; we were so busy addressing postcards to our friends that we hadn’t time to do much sight- seeing. Princevard—It-was a great gamel Yaleton's centerfielder stole second base five times. Miss Barnard—Why, didn’t he keep It when he stole it the first time? The Dear Girl. “Wife, why don’t you make some flannel cakes?” ‘The bride was green at cooking, but she was game. “1 wild, if you wish it,” she said. o Hanging around in the western city, the tourist discovered a former mayor: dancing a jig. e “You seem In fine spirits,” he sug gested. ' “I am,” answered the other. “I have Just been recalled.” “I don’t see ‘anything -complimen- tary about that,” said the tourist. “Oh, yes there is,” the westerner insisted. “This 18 the gecond recall.” “How 1t that?” > “Well, you see, I was recalled, and then they recalled the recall.” A WOMAN'S BACK The Advice of This Bemidji Woman is of Certain Value. i Many'a woman’s back has many aches and pains. Oft times ’tis the kidneys’ fault. That’s why Doan’s Kidney Pills are so effective. Many Bemidji women know this. Read what one has to say about it. Mrs. A. E. Hannah, 704 Mississip- pi avenue, Bemidji, Minn., says: “Some time ago I began to use Doan’s Kidney Pills and the results were sat- isfactory. At that time I was suffer- ing severely from backache and my kidneys were not doing their work as they should. A friend advised me to take Doan’s Kidney Pills and I got some. They restored me to excellent health.” (Statement given October 7, 1910). _ A LATER ENDORSEMENT.
