CARSON. E. & DENU, MAROLD J. DANE, Editor. Graham M. Torrance. The Pioneer does not feel that there is cause for a change in the county attorney’s office. Mr. Camp- bell and Mr. Torrance are both good, clean men who stand on practically the same principles. That being the case, there will be mno gain by the nowination of Mr. Campbell. On the other hand, Mr. Torrance has held the office for over a year and has had opportunity to become thoroughly familiar with its work. He is a lawyer of ability, a man of conscience, and his integrity has nev- er been questioned. As long as Mr. Torrance has madg good and wishes a renomination, the Pioneer can see no reason why the Republican vot- ers of the county shall not give it to him by a big majority. Free Newspaper ‘Space. The Milwaukee Free Press pub- lishes the following editorial con- cerning the giving away of newspa- per space, and it just about coincides with the situation in a. good many towns and cities besides. Milwaukee. The Free Press says: Advertising publicity is what a newspaper has to sell. It is as much a commodity marked with a price as the wares in a dry goods store. Yet thousanis of citizens,- who would not think of asking a merchant to give them so much as a necktie have Lo compunction in asking that an ad- veriisement be given them by a news- raper. The thought does not even tnter their heads that every inch of space so given, in addition to provid- ing them with the most valuable kind of service, actually costs the newspa- per in editorial labor, in composition, iu metal, in ink, in stereotyping, in printing, ete., a very definite sum of money. . The Free Press, like every other Milwaukee paper, is liberal in giving of its space to further the cause of philanthropic, public and other in- stitutions, enterprises and causes where the object is non-commercial and conducive to the public welfare. In return it expects only apprecia- tion—appreciation of the fact that the press is giving its most costly commodity, a service so valuable that the beneficiaries could not afford to buy it and without which their insti- tution, enterprise or cause could not exist, a service which is always made at a sacrifice to the ntws columns and at an actual expense. It expects recognition of the fact that while halls, theaters and other public places, bill posters and all the other service enlisted in these causes demand compensation with but few exceptions, it is the newspaper that 01 elected ot the Boston common. coun-|- old today. That which is purely a favor is accepted as a matter of course, and what would be requests| are couched as demands. ‘When the courtesy has been per- formed there is rarely appreciation, and more often dissatisfaction—gen- erally silence. ‘The result in many other cities has been that a price has been put upon every kind of publicity, no matter what its object—even upon the church notice. In those cities, we ‘warrant, such favors as the press be- stows are properly valued. THIS DATE IN HISTORY.
