DANE, Editor. is a forceful man; otherwise he never could have accomplished what he did in California fn the overthrow of the railroad ring—one of the strongest and most thoroughly entrenched poli- tical organizations in the country. If an act of Providence should bring him to the occupancy of first place, he would probably come nearer meeting the ideals and requirements of that element of which he is a leader than any other man available. In other words, the Progressives have provid- ed a well balanced ticket, particular- 1y well balanced by comparison with either of the other two. Severe Punishment. A slap on the wrist Is what he should get, ‘Who dares to resist A suftragette. Uncalled For. An Excellent Exhibit. The Beltrami county exhibit at the state fair is one of which every farm- er in this county may be proud. To four men largely belongs the credit for so arranging the specimens that they make a tasty booth. A. P. Rit- chie, F. S. Arnold, C. P. Schroeder and August Jarchow are not land men, all eXcebt Mr. Arnold being farmers, but they worked as hard as though they had thousands of acres to sell. As a result, the Beltrami booth is one of the attraction spots of the fair. This year promises to be a record breaker for the fair. The erop is bumper and the individual samples arrived at the grounds in first class shape. These make exhibits that tell better than printer’s ink and paper what can be done on the lands of Minnesota. Beautiful weather the first two days made it possible to set new records in attendance and so in- sure the financial success of the pro- ject. With continued good weather the fair should break all previous at- tendance records. Balancing the Ticket. The New York Commercial, which is regarded as an independent Repub- lican paper, discusses the importance of the vice presidency from the stand- point of the place which Garrett Ho- bart had come to occupy in the first administration of President McKin- ley. It will be remembered that when Mr. Hobart was nominated the coun- try asked, “Who is Hobart?” He had not achieved a national reputation, although a man of distinction in New Jersey—strong and successful in af- fairs, and influential. But when he was elected he made of the office of vice-president more nearly what it ought to be than any other man of re- cent times. He was more than presi- dent of the senate. He exerted great influence in that body and helped to shape legislation to a degree never be- fore traceable to the vice-presidential office. And not only that, he rénder- ed invaluable service to Mr. McKin- ley as a wise counsellor, a sympa- thetic and loyal assistant, and one on ‘whom the president relied with great confidence in meeting the many and difficult problems of his office. / The vice-presidency meant some- thing while Mr. Hobart was the occu- pant, and the important place in the organization of the government to which he raised the office has attach- ed new dignity to that position and made it important that the party nominations for vice-president should approximate, if they do not equal, in ability and general fitness the nomi- nation for the presidency itself. In this present situation three men of different types have been chosen by the leading parties for second place. Mr. Sherman was nominated in 1908 as a concession to that element of the party which was completely out-voted in the convention. That he was selected because of his fitness to succeed to the office of president will scarcely be maintained by any one. His party would never have thought of nominating him for the presiden- cy. His renomination last June came about through the domination in the convention of the same element which was in the minority four years before, and to which the consolation prize of vice-presidency was awarded at that time. Mr. Marshall, the Democratic can- didate for vice-president, could gath- er no strength outside of his own state delegation. He represents a doubtful and pivotal state, and his nomination was doubtless dictated more by good politics than by any- thing else. He is a man of talents and attainments, but was not re- garded as of presidential size. The Progressives selected for the second place a man who, with Col- onel Roogevelt out of the way, might have won first place on his qualifica~ tions and his record.
