About all-the man can do is to “Follow.” blind third party That’s what most of them are doing in any party. Speaking of good crops, don’t for- get the silent, but elogquent oyster. Reports say that this crop will the largest in years. F. S. Kalberg of the Clearwater Crystal, has filed for register of deeds for Clearwater county. He occupied this position at ome time, but the Bagley Herald predicts that he “Can’t Come Back.” . Kalberg may be able to produce the “Goods.” There are a few men in the world who are big enough to live without explaining or apologizing. The man whose mind is so absorbed with the important affairs of life that he can depend on his ideas, his work and the results of his labor to answer all questions and make all explanations, has mastered that which has always been a riddle to the average man. The art of living without apologiz- ing for our acts and conduct is only acquired after many years of serious study, sincere devotion to certain pur- poses and after an experience with the people of the world which per- " mits you to know that after all what other people think about you is, in reality, not near so important as what you think of yourself. There is one individual with which each of us must associate through all the days of our lives. This individ- ual is ourself, and only the man who has a high purpose, Wilo has devel- oped a practical standard of conduct, not only in business, but in the ev- eryday affairs of life, is good company to himself. Time explains everything. Time dissolves everything into its various units and makes clear all that is nec- essary for us to know. Nothing makes any difference to the time. Through the process of time every- thing is unveiled, unfolded and re- vealed to all the world, or at least to that part ot it which concerns itself to know. If you stop to explain your conduct to someone else you are running the risk of being misunderstood or per- haps are incurring the displeasure or losing the confidence of someone else. This does not mean that the policies of a business or that the plans for a new corporation or that the particu- lar country through® which a rail- road is to run should not be discussed and decided after giving everything of importance the highest, greatest care; but it does mean that our con- duct, our personal affairs and our lives, must be according to our high- est and best understanding of what personal conduct is. If we attempt to explain our opin- ions, if we attempt to explain our lives, if we attempt to apologize to others for everything we do, we will constantly be bowing and catering to this person and that, and this means to destroy our personality, to dilute the strength of our individuality and to constantly subject the strength of our convictions to the negative opin- ions of others who do not know any- thing concerning our scheme or plan of life, who do not understand our purpose, and who, beyond mere curi- osity, do not care. The man who never explains, who never apologizes, is the man who has the. least to explain and apologize for. The man who lives his life and permits his conduct, the results of each day’s work, answer all questions, make all explanations and stand as the final answer to all the interroga- tion points which come to us from the four winds of the world is the Ideal Man. Perhaps this man does not live —we have never yet produced the Ideal Man, so far as any one has yet discovered. But if we shounld ever Litiative or originality to explain your The final answer to all that you have done, to all that you have said, to all that you have read, to all the company that you have kept, to all the travelling you have done, to all the things to which you have aspired and to all the days you have lived, is written out in what you are. - What the world needs is fewer explanations, fewer apologies. It does not require ability or experience or brains or in- conduct or to apologize. =This is the work of slaves and we should leave bowing and explaining and apologiz- ing to bell-hops, hotel porters and waiters in hotel dining rooms—and even here, if the work is done well, if the service is properly rendered, the work and the service stands as the only explanation or apology nec- essary. Your apologizing and your explan- ations are like New Year resolutions —easily made because in the making of them you “hypnotize” yourself into believing that you are actually doing you are only substituting a bogus resolution or a counterfeit explana- tion for what you really should do or for what you should have done. ———Eflicxency before Sept. 3. tion for second choice.
